give us this day our daily bait

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I played in island and a few other games at the time. I agree that they wouldn't work now, but I don't think players being more demanding is the only factor at play here.

These simpler games used to have multiple events every month. Something like a_facility had three week-long events, and some games like poly might have 10 single-day events dispersed throughout the month. The modern attempts at these sorts of games tend to stick to the "one event per month" schedule. Simple, cracky events just don't offer enough to do on a once per month schedule.

Players also backtag longer. 15 years ago, a lot of people wouldn't respond to your tag-in if it was a couple days late. A lot of my threads got dropped after a few days, and it was very rare for a thread to go on for a month or more. Nowadays wrapping a thread within a month is about average but it's not uncommon to backtag longer. Threads have to have enough substance to keep a player's interest that long. They also stay in games for a year or more a lot more often than they did back in the day, so they tend to want something to do other than settle down and hang out.

I do think our standards have gone up, we're not as happy to just have a big box of characters to shake around while playing cracky meme-style events, but it's understandable as a player to want something meatier with the way things are now. Unfortunately that means there is a pretty huge buy-in for potential mods in terms of writing lore and info pages before they even know if the game will succeed, and we need to be encouraging mods instead of discouraging them, but I'm not sure how to fix it. People aren't going to join games they don't find interesting.

Re: +1

I don't think not joining games you're not interested in is a problem. I think that tearing those games down or complaining about them IS a problem.

We need to be more willing to see games that may not be to our tastes and not actively go in and bitch about them, often before they're even open or have had a chance. A negative atmosphere about games on anon comms can be incredibly discouraging to mods and potential players who are actually interested in those games because they decide they'd rather not be in the target area for the people complaining, imo.

It's fine to not be into a game, but why does that so often have to equal trying to make sure no one else is or loudly proclaiming everything you think is wrong with a game instead of just sticking to things you're actually interested in and giving games you may not wanna join a fighting chance?

How often does it happen that people tear into games before they're open, though? Wankgate outright bans discussion of unopened games. The only incident anyone can point to here is the mostly civil (I said mostly, not entirely) discussion about Majority Rule. And even the people who were a little rude about Majority Rule, I wouldn't consider to be tearing the game to shreds.

Have there been recent incidents other than that one? Is it happening on Plurk?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
it happened a lot before it became a rule in wankgate didn't it? correct me if i wrong, i have an old brain.

Re: +1

da but it doesn't really matter if you think anon has a dumb argument, the progression to nobody wanting to mod a new public game (or nobody being able to successfully start one) is undeniable at this point

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
dwrp goes through seasons of "it's impossible to start a new game!" whenever several other new, popular, relatively big games start popping off

that those games are all invite only this time and you're out of the loop is unfortunate but not caused by RPA

anyway there's a public game trying to start up right now on my plurk feed that everyone seems to be ignoring, so simply having said games available is obviously not the full solution

"that those games are all invite only this time and you're out of the loop is unfortunate but not caused by RPA"

ive been in this hobby ever since the move to dw and everytime this conversation comes up its always the same "it's not the anon comms fault."

it is

most people in this hobby have terrible self-esteem and low confidence. what do u think happens when there is a public wall where people can write anything on with zero restriction or accountability?

people either leave to a place where the public wall doesnt exist or form their own closed communities

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
+1000000

everyone blames wankgate but rpa is just as bad. if these comms ceased to exist the hobby would be improved overnight.

Re: +1

nah that's dumb. you're right about wg but rpa is basically the psl corkboard, even outside the ads

anons here can be and are just as pointlessly vicious and shitty as on wg

in fact id say some days attitudes are nastier here

as someone who has modded a private game and knows multiple other people who have modded private games

lmao rpa had literally nothing to do with us making our games private/invite-only. we wanted to make games for people we liked to rp with to play in. that's it, that's all it was. there are plenty of people in this hobby who may not be wanky but who are still a pain in the ass to deal with and can make a game's atmosphere unpleasant and having a private/invite-only game means you don't have to deal with these people throwing a shitfit when you tell them they're not welcome to app to your game.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i left public games about a decade ago. never going back to it tbh

for me it is also less about the drama and anon wank of a public game and more about exclusively being able to write with people whose writing styles and interests mesh with mine without the painful awkwardness of feeling obligated to cater to a wider player base i have no interest in

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP was about public games specifically, that's why I'm not talking about private games

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
and yet

i honestly think a lot of this handwringing is anons displacing their anxiety about the community shifting to invite only/private games, because we can no longer lodge that complaint here on rpa without getting "invites working as intended" as a response

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the new public game, anon? It hasnt crossed my feed and im on the hunt for something fresh

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
oh honey i'm not linking it here, and you know why

check dwrpnews though, they replurk all the time, and most of the invite only games going around rn are invite in name only tbh

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
my dude, a vast majority of games that get talked about here aren't dragged or torn to shreds. there's no need to be terrified of mentioning something to an interested player.

let's not let that extremely tame majority rules drama prevent us from mentioning games anywhere but plurk (a service a lot of us neither like nor use and should absolutely not be required just to find out about games) forever, ok?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call it tame, it sucked to see happen. I don't want to see another game torn up before it has a shot.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't think not joining games you're not interested in is a problem"

not having enough players around to create interest in games IS a problem though

no matter how good a game is or how much it's left alone to get off the ground, if you only get 2 or 3 applications for your first round it's hard to want to keep going

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2023-04-17 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, but it's easier to want to keep it going for a small group of players if you aren't also dealing with a lot of anon negativity. i've known many people to avoid applying to games that get negative talk, too.

i don't think it's that hot a take to say maybe we should just shut the fuck up about games we have no interest in joining. i've had a lot of friends who quit modding because the atmosphere was so generally negative and it ultimately wasn't worth putting in so much time and effort just to line up and get dunked on for the grand crimes of not catering their games exactly to x y and z.

i'm not even saying we can or should change, but people can't bitch about games not opening or us losing mods if they're not willing to take the basic ass step of being less of a pain to mod for.
