but my main character syndrome

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

>we all have a decent understanding of what constitutes unusual character attributes

BUT SOME CHARACTERS MAY REACT TO THINGS THAT ARE *USUAL*

why do you think i gave you the example of the black hair, jesus

> someone might say in prose, 'and now (character) extended his sense read to determine whether (my character) has any trace of uranium radioactivity on them.' and that's my cue to mention the finding in the prose of the reply

you don't understand that a character may freak out or dislike yours on sight because of first impressions

if your black-and-white-manga-icons character has blue eyes, which equal demons in my character's world, i need to know this BEFORE writing the tag. because otherwise my first tag to you is "character looks at your character's eyes, what does he see?". that's it. that's all i can give you. i can't write a reaction because my character is going to either take out his sword or offer to shake hands.

you remind me of the players in garbleblasted playing the hitachiin twins without clarifying that one of them dyed his hair. new characters ICly got them mixed when they shouldn't have.

i think the point you're missing is that maybe you don't care about info posts so you don't look at them but you're not understanding that the point is to make it easier for other people you thread with, who might not have your same threading approach

whether or not YOU want to use the post doesn't actually matter

if someone is playing a character with such an extreme disposition or reaction that would radically influence threading down to immediate life/death or like/dislike, they should probably be putting a one-line note in their top level.

( ooc: just a heads up, Blorbo is likely to react very aggressively to people with blue eyes in scenarios 1-2, but be okay with them in 5-7. )

but most characters don't have minor detail attributes that can make the difference between life and death in a starting thread. you're giving a 1% kind of example.

i just realized that we're forgetting the most important part here:

we're assuming *you* started the thread, if someone else wants to do the setting up of a new thread, they don't have the information you "curated"

unless you expect every meme opt level to include a full description of your character

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2023-01-15 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
i get that! i think i understand why people self-select out of those without info posts, and i'm probably going to start thinking about self-selecting out of players who have them. it just sounds as if the differences in thread approach are too vast.

yes, that's what i said in my first comment - i typically do starters.

you don't need to start avoiding people. idk why anons have started acting like the only answer is to act like a pariah and tag out even LESS in this hobby that already struggles to get people to reply. it feels like it's an excuse not to tag.

i'm giving you a 1% example because it seems you can't get the point unless we go for extremes. unless it's something "unusual" you don't care, it's like you can't get nuance

people irl react to smaller things every day. a heavy metal band logo on a t-shirt it's going to make an old conservative man make stupid assumptions. a spider-man shirt on the other hand, may prompt someone to call you "hey, nerd"

Looking at the TDM, you’re not missing much.

Re: ayrt

i'd say there are three types of character attributes: the items that are extremely divisive (the 1% for which someone should warn in their top level), the items that you'd typically mention in your starters (more general brushstrokes, here is a burly man with eight tentacles and a gelid blue gaze, looming over the room) and then there are the extremely detailed ones, which you can either get a nudge for or skim.

i can put down in an info post that 'my character usually dresses in modern urban clothes with occasional political slogans' and it still wouldn't cover the specifics of what they're wearing that day ( the OCCUPY WALL STREET t-shirt that might set off banker Blorbo). for that, you'd still depend on the starter.

i do appreciate your perspective, and i can see info posts are of value to you. i still think it ultimately comes down to, we wouldn't really work well as thread partners. and that's okay!

>for that, you'd still depend on the starter.

yeah but you admitted multiple times on this thread that you don't include those details on the tag

but keep fucking that chicken i guess

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2023-01-15 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i think it's fair for them to have their boundaries! if that means not tagging someone like me, i totally get it.

Re: ayrt

i've admitted i don't include the exact height of my character (or weight) in metrics, anon. i prefer to rely on adjectives.

but you're right that i'm beating a dead horse here, because it's obvious we're not going to agree, and i'm just irritating folks. so i'll leave you to the discussion, i've probably derailed it enough.

>i've admitted i don't include the exact height of my character (or weight) in metrics, anon. i prefer to rely on adjectives.

no, you literally said you only include details that stand out and don't want to understand characters are gonna pass judgment on everyday things as well like normal people do irl. and yeah of course nobody wants metrics on the tag, that's what infoposts are for. to know if my average-high character can rest their chin on your average-high character's head

but yeah carry on

i think you're both being weirdly intense about this and you're clearly better off not tagging each other, but honestly it's strange how resistant some anons are to literally any extra effort that would facilitate rp with strangers

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2023-01-15 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i think you're getting this intense pushback because "opening up and working off an infodump while I tag" is both 1. transparently condescending phrasing and 2. does not describe how the majority of people treat character info posts

frankly it's strange that's how you imagine people do use them

(Anonymous) 2023-01-15 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i honestly got mad and i admit derailing but the other anon put it in the best way, short and to the point: even if anon doesn't want to *use* infoposts, they should have one for those who need it, it won't hurt you to make things easier for everyone.

lol brave of you to admit that you got mad on an anoncomm

like ranting anon said, info posts are standard across all rp platforms. this is clearly beyond "playstyles"

i'm anon, brave would've been if i said it logged in

but yeah anon hit a huge pet peeve of mine because i've had to recon so many threads that could've been easily avoided with an infopost

Re: ayrt

it's a peeve of mine as well. i once had a meme text thread with a book character i was unfamiliar with who used a pb and didn't have an info post. the thread was instantly flirty and i didn't mind so tagged it back a few times before i googled the character out of interest and discovered that though the pb was of a person in their 20s, the character was actually a teenager. if they'd had even a basic info post i would have discovered that earlier and not tagged them back, or opted out.
