there's no harm in covering your ass. post a combo hmd opt-out in all your journals and go on with your life. the chances of anyone using it are so low it doesn't matter at all except for optics

Never say never, anon. Many a game or even genre has launched and been a hit when everyone thought it would fail.

We might just be thinking of different things here? I don't want a 20 millennia history that needs a glossary to interpret, I just want a decent enough idea of what elf society is like in game so I have something more to work with than "your character is an elf".

Re: AU GAMES

(Anonymous) 2023-01-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
da but I think you guys agree more than you think. Rpers care about their own characters, lore should pertain to the playable characters. Nobody likes history book lessons on the setting, or drama between NPCS.

This is why modern AUs have historically been the most successful, because it's immediately obvious how to interact with the setting. If your character has an interest in politics, they could be a politician, if they're a celebrity they could be an actor, and so on.

And I want the elf society to be ‘the idea of an elf culture you, the player, already has’ and go no further

Okay, yeah, we definitely want different things then.

I was wondering what kind of things I should hit when playing Anya, mostly. I've never played a character her age and I'm a little in over my head.

A ridiculous Yugioh/Kakegurui/no game-no-life-style universe where the RP revolves around playing games to solve issues.

It doesn't have to be card games, just any game of skill or luck easily played online would be fun.

Re: AU GAMES

(Anonymous) 2023-01-10 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
There's a such thing as too much lore too, of course, but I need something I can sink my teeth into and create a character that feels like they belong in the setting with.

i feel like this is more suited for a tabletop, or psls, than dwrp.

also did this bs in cdc, never again.

I don't have a resolution so much as a theme to carry me through the year and this year is simple pleasures! I don't need big fancy things, but the simplicity of, idk a warm cup of a tea and a good book and coloring for 10 minutes after a stressful meeting.

What are some simple pleasures in your lives, anons?

Re: AU GAMES

(Anonymous) 2023-01-10 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say I need CDC levels of lore? There's a middle ground between "game lore is snappy and consumable in a few minutes" and "game lore is so long it's cumbersome and difficult to keep track of".

The middle ground is what I want. A medium amount of lore. An amount that gives you enough to work off of to create a character without being an information overload.

Reparacija

[personal profile] reparacijamods 2023-01-10 08:02 am (UTC)(link)

A world cursed to destruction, a people resentful of outsiders and fighting for survival, a prison designed to harvest sexual energy in hopes of restoring the planet to its former glory. Welcome to the Intergalactic Correctional Institution - Reparacija.

Reparacija is a pan-fandom kink game set in the fictional prison of the same name, with an overarching plot and a mix of sex, horror aspects, sci-fi elements, and some 'slice of life'. Characters are brought to the facility under the guise of serving a sentence for crimes committed against their home-worlds, with the promise of returning home after their sentence is completed. In reality, fulfillment of those sentences is all that's keeping the planet alive as the native population scrambles in a race against time to find a way to stop the blight and break the curse placed upon their planet generations ago. Here, character actions can change the course of the game, and emphasis is on CR-building as characters will need to rely on one another to survive on a planet that grows more and more uninhabitable and inhospitable as time goes on, among a people who only care about their ability to sustain the planet's life.

The clock is ticking. Will you help save a dying planet and return home a hero, or will you let the world burn? The choice is yours.

>make opt-out posts for children and animals

only in horror or sex settings where it may be an issue, not for a silly jamjar. children and animals actually do just fine getting cr, don't let a few loud anons give you the wrong impression

homestucks had opt outs for the special text not because they were a hated fad canon

an opt out post is "expected" if your character has something "inherent" that lots of people may want to opt out for, which is why it's usually for triggers/uncomfortable topics (which is why animals/kids in horror fall in this).

can you put one on every journal like anon above said? sure, i don't think there is anything wrong with that, but it is not the "climate" as you asked. personally i think pms work just fine for that if the character doesn't fall in the what i said above. opt outs are barely used anyway, they are a formality

In a fantasy world, a young woman (mid-early teens what I have in mind, could probably adjust it up or down for preferences) in a poor family is identified as the reincarnation of a religion's goddess of love.

The good: She's brought to the temple in the big city where she's pampered and given a life of impossible luxury, a far cry from what she'd known.

The bad: Other than never really seeing her family again, she learns that a big part of her duties as goddess of love involves having sex with the clergy, worshipers, aristocrats, etc. Lots of sex. Lots and lots of sex.

Looking to play the goddess! Lots of variables here (is she actually divine or is it a con, for one) - can do something more dubconny or her being more enthusiastic. Substances (aphro incense anyone?) would be lots of fun too. Marathon sex/sex exhaustion/big orgies are lovely.

Re: AU GAMES

(Anonymous) 2023-01-10 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Having played in what was likely one of the last big "urban fantasy AU" games here on DW, I'll tell you what worked and what didn't in this particular genre, some of which can be applied to AU games as a whole.

Worked:
-Having a reason to get characters together in a big city. A faerie festival celebrating winter, vampires sending out flyers asking people to donate blood, things that made characters actively seek each other out instead of just bumping into each other on the street. Exchange that for "historical fantasy kingdom" or "giant space station" and it'll still work.
-Intense character relationships that were already built in. I played a vampire, and due to the ages of the other vampires, we had a chance to build up pre-existing relationships before our characters ever got into the game. Building off of that...
-A "figure out character relationships" meme. Once a month, the mod would post one where we could say who our character was, what kind of creature they were, and how they related to the world as a whole. Other players could comment and figure out pre-existing relationships or how to get characters into the same space.
-Having characters of every type. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, etc. Making a wide variety that people could play from allowed people who were interested to make some pretty creative AUs.
-Overarching plot. Have a goal in mind for the game. Whether that's "find out who is kidnapping all the faeries" or "why is this alien race taking over the galaxy" for a space game, it helps to have a concrete if slow goal to work towards, something in the background characters can always pull on as material for a thread.

Didn't work:
-Factions. I know for mods this seems like an easy way to get character conflict going and seems fun to have a tier-level of "Head Vampire", "Second-In-Command", three open slots for "Minion Vampires" and such. But it does NOT WORK. AU games tend to attract a niche audience and even if every person plays three characters there simply aren't enough to fill all the slots in factions, which leads to a great struggle to make the complicated systems work or have any sort of meaning to it.
-Trying to make characters stay. What was fun for the game as a whole is some people would bring in character just to shake things up like a witch who wanted to take over the city, and then once she was defeated, dropped from the game. Don't try to give out incentives for characters that will stay around a long time. Just let them come and go as they please.
-Rewards. This may work in a bigger game but trying to hand out rewards which is usually based on a thread-count is too complicated for most players to want to deal with and is also HARD in a game where threads tend to move at a much slower pace than in regular games due to the smaller pool size of characters to interact with.
-NPCs that are too involved. Unless you as a mod plan to play this character as almost a regular OC, relying on NPCs tends to slow things down and make it hard to get meaningful play going if you're waiting on the head warlock or alien space marine general to get back to you.

but if ten players are playing elves from the same city, they need to have the same culture. and even if you manage to make those ten players have a session of that (which lol good luck), if someone wants to app an elf in the future, they need to have easy access to that information. nobody should chase down players to know the basic culture behind a race before deciding if they want to app that race or not

you're expecting dnd out of dwrp

Why does it feel bad if it isn't personal? Honest question. I've come to expect this behaviour in dwrp so it never bothers me when a planned thread is dropped a handful of tags in, or someone ends up being a flake, so I am curious. No judgement or anything here! Maybe I'm a heartless wench.
