Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Is there a better way to attract potential partners for a non-very often used character in rp? I'm not great at brackets but better at writing prose.

Other than tagging out to people on memes or in your games, or advertising good ideas for PSLs, not really. Assuming you've got the setup right.

To maximize, have good icons, a profile with a summary, a well-formatted post with more in-depth information in your journal (possibly with links to a canon wiki), a permissions page, and a kinks list if you're gonna do smut.

For RP ideas or hooks, you'll want something that isn't overly wordy, probably a paragraph or two at most. Something that might engage people or leave them feeling like they can add to it rather than just being another role in the existing story.

I want to play a character from a visual novel, but the novel is very text heavy, has very few images of character art compared to modern visual novels and mostly reserves expressive art for the main character as a result of being a psychological horror VN. So although the character I want to play is important to the plot, I've only got four icons for her if I use official art.

Now, the normal work-around for this is to use fanart. The problem is that the fandom for this is pretty small, probably as a result of the game being twenty-one years old, and most art is of the main character and/or his love interests, so using fanart just brings the total up to eight, and they're not a wide range of expressions, either.

So I'm sort of stuck on what to do. I don't want to use crappy icons, a small number of them or worse, have both of those problems at the same time. Is it acceptable in DWRP to use a PB under these circumstances? Should I put a little disclaimer up on my character's profile to make it clear she's from a VN, I'm just using a PB due to lack of other options? Is there a way to find a manga character with similar features and use icons of them, or is going for a live-action PB a better idea?

absolutely i would use a pb that you think looks enough like the character. i think anyone in this situation who wants real or nice icons while playing should feel comfortable doing that.

You could post links to pictures of her in the pb suggestion thread and see if anyone can help you locate a similar manga pb or such?

I just realized I have no idea what people are talking about when they talk about finishing threads. It sounds like it should mean playing them out to a point where they reached a specific conclusion and the interaction ended, but if that's what it actually means then I've seen (not played myself, seen) maybe five threads be finished in the last decade and I've been in multiple games where I'm not sure any thread was ever finished.

i consider it fully ending a scene. i finish dozens of threads a month in games but don't pay attention to what other people do (aside from noting that a lot of players tend to drop like 10 comments in). you just have to find people who like to complete things.

seconding "finishing the scene" which doesn't equal finishing the IC interaction. sometimes it means playing the important bits and then with the other player you agree to close it with "and then they went out for ice-cream"

how do you come up with assumed cr? i don't feel comfortable just taking completely random guesses about characters i'm canon blind to, with players i've never met.

this is why having a basic character info post in your journal is so important. if i can look in your character's journal and see that they're a former military guy, i can tag them with my own military guy and spin up some cr about how they were in the same unit together at one point. i can assume the player will probably be fine with that sort of cr because it's based on the character's canon background, and if not they can say something.

talk to people

in terms of a starting point, figure out where your character spends their time. do they have a job? do they go to the same coffee place every day? who else works there or goes to that coffee place? there's a way for two characters to have a relationship.

chat with the players and check what their characters got up to in general, i agree with the other anon about going to the same places. do they spend time at a general area? happen to work at the same cafe? something simple so you can suggest they know each other casually ("i like chocolate cake" "cool"), so you can save more important moments for threading out ("you alright man? i got you chocolate cake" "no, but thanks").

what do you do when a rando suddenly writes the most OOC thing for their character that you're turned off of the thread? i don't know this person and it's just a low-stakes thread, not a game. but i'm familiar with their character and what they sent me was completely out of left field, especially when they were really good and engaging until they sent that particular tag.

what do you do if icly i've gotten to the point that my character is mortal enemies with C and both my character and C are very close with B, and it feels like my character at this point has to give B an it's me or her (C) type of ultimatum? i do feel bad about potentially impacting B and C's CR but it's hard to see how else my character would react ICly :(

I'd really like to play a character, but while they're a major character in their series, their powers, motivations, and core values are a major spoiler. How do I go about even considering playing them in a game?

When playing a character who canonically uses she/her while superhero-ing and he/him in civilian life, 1. how do I write that in tags without it coming across as confusing as to who we're referring to? and 2. how do I write that in a game application without running into the same problem? And before you say, "well, just pick the one that seems more true to the character", we see in flashbacks to said character's childhood that both she/her and he/him were used even back then, depending on who was addressing them, and at no point did said character express a preference for one.
