Thanks for the links and the tips, they look useful.

+1 i'm going through this right now in my own game. i'm a fast tagger who can do 20+ tags in a day if I'm feeling motivated but i'm being slow as balls in one of my games because everyone else there tags so slowly that there's no real incentive or excitement for me to respond to tags quickly when i know i probably won't get a tag back for another few days.

I suppose I could get away with "They recite some poetry. It's pretty good, if you're into that."

But I'd still like to have a bit of it down, on my end.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-19 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
as someone that has been playing a character like that for almost three years now i can tell you: this never came up. at least the whole thing about construction and rhyming. whenever he discussed literature in general or his love for stories, stuff like that, he mentioned his favorite themes and where he got inspiration. but anon themes in poetry aren't THAT different from themes in fiction in general, and i promise you nobody will notice. threading against an actual academic paper isn't fun, people don't want to write actual discussions of (to follow the other anon's example) string theory vs loop quantum gravity.

you need to be ic. what does your character like? heroics? romance? emphasis on emotions? just poetry that describes nature? etc. as for your "They recite some poetry. It's pretty good, if you're into that." - this has an easy fix. just steal some actual poetry from google. it's what i do. as long as you don't use something super famous like neruda, again, nobody will mind. i used to do this with a singer i used to play back in lj too, took indie videos from youtube as samples of his music. if you feel guilty, do as i do and make an ooc note giving credit

*you JUST need to be ic

way to go self. but yeah write about what they like about the process of writing, what it makes them feel, that kind of thing. not metrics.

I felt the same way about most poetry and then ended up playing a character very into it- and specifically very into a lot of poets I actively disliked. Tbh I think the experience helped me appreciate poetry more in the long run!

Some thoughts, if you're really eager to actually get more into poetry:

Canon might offer you an entry point. Are there particular poems/writers they like? Read some of those poems. If not, you could look into poets from their time period/setting (or best approximation if it's a fantasy canon etc).

Don't worry about the rhyming, or the construction- read the actual words and try to put yourself in mind of your character. Is there a feeling described that relates to something in their history? Is there a mood to it that might resonate with them? Do they ever talk about why they like what they like?

Now, go read some *totally* different poetry. This is going to sound like shitty homework, because you don't like poetry. But it's not about you. Find something from a totally different era, or a different culture, ideally both. Again don't get hung up on the structure: read the words. Or don't! Go on Youtube and watch a poetry slam. Listen to some recitations. What would your character think of this? Would they be excited at something new or confused because it doesn't seem like poetry to them? What could they pick out that is familiar?

Pick a couple of well-known poems and read some essays or responses to them. Different readers will have different interpretations that might open things up to you. It's not cheating to see what people who are into poetry say about it. If it's historical or from a place you're not familiar with, this can be really helpful to catch the things the original/intended audience would that you might miss. Annotations are your friend. Learn to love the footnote.

Maybe dabble in literary theory a little. Here's a poetry exercise I've commonly seen done in high schools, and it's really interesting to see what people come up with:

http://teachingliterature.pbworks.com/w/page/24000528/Poetry%20%28chapter%209%20activities%29

If you find a poem you like, look for others by that author. Find out what poets THEY like. Ask your friends to link you poetry. (Ask me to link you poetry, I have shitty weird taste and I'm not sorry!) Go admire Richard Siken quotes on tumblr moodboards.

I have faith in you nonny! Have fun! (Shit, now I want to play my poetry character again.)

No problem!! He was also in an episode of cabinet of curiosities which I haven't seen but leans more towards the period dress than fantasy but might work too. I figured icons of s&b would be easier to find tho.

Also seconding the essays a nonny above linked, they seem like a good intro to the study of poetry.

Consider picking up a cheap secondhand Norton anthology or something- student-focused editions are great for annotations and essays.

And super agree with the suggestion of using existing poetry as your character's- a link for credit is more than fine- we're all playing fast and loose with copyright, no one will be scandalized.

this is great advice--while I do agree with other anons that glossing over your char's love of poetry is perfectly fine, I also think the specificity that comes with actually knowing about something a char is passionate about really shines through in play (for ex: as someone who's played a char who's obsessed with books and stories, it was always easier for me to engage with other book-loving chars who had specific literary tastes and preferences, rather than instances where the player was like "they love books, they've read 30 books this month!")

so as long as this isn't too much of a drag for you, I really encourage it!

two poems I'd rec to see if they resonate with you are "the river-merchant's wife: a letter" by ezra pound and "1919" by yeats (tho I know yeats can be really fucking wordy), they're about pretty universal emotions and not puzzle/riddle poems

also if you're looking for poetry analysis/criticism, the poet robert hass has written some really good stuff. good luck!

recs for good meaningful/poignant anime? i'm not looking for strictly ""sad"" per se, and i don't want obnoxious attempts at being philosophical, but i want something with really iconic, memorable, emotional scenes. gundam:ibo comes to mind as a good example of what i'm looking for. i want to watch something with staying power, something that makes me think about it a while after i've seen it.

houseki no kuni / land of the lustrous - a VERY beautiful anime (and manga) set in a desolate, empty world where only anthropomorphic gem-like people live. about growing and changing and becoming unrecognizeable to oneself, but it's not like... super dour or anything. there are a lot of fun and funny moments, and the vibe overall is tranquil and dreamy, but also lonely

mushishi - set between edo/meiji japan, centered on ginko, a 'mushi master' who travels around the country helping people with their mushi-related problems. mushi are kind of like... spiritual/magical bacteria, an invisible natural but also dangerous part of this world.

Ranking of Kings really goes into the whole "first impressions are never the whole story" theme without being preachy about it.

Ancient Magus Bride has a touch of that while being about a girl learning to value her own life through caring for others.

Mob Psycho 100 is about a plain, humble boy with psychic powers having a huge impact on every life (and unlife) he touches and generally inspiring them to be better people.

bokurano is very definitely on the bleak and sad side of things, but it is truly excellent and I would describe it as meaningful and inspiring in the end - very much about the beauty of the world even through the horrors. CW for sexual assault, scenes of familial abuse, and child death if you read it though.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

what do you do when a rando suddenly writes the most OOC thing for their character that you're turned off of the thread? i don't know this person and it's just a low-stakes thread, not a game. but i'm familiar with their character and what they sent me was completely out of left field, especially when they were really good and engaging until they sent that particular tag.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

express bafflement privately to a trusted friend, carry on as normal until it's proven to be a pattern instead of a fluke, then gently nope out. is what i would do. tbh.

So, you have character A, a king's/emperor's/whatever illegitimate son who lived out in the boonies not knowing his parentage until character B comes along. B has his sights set on being a kingmaker, either because he's very interested in having influence in the country but doesn't have the pedigree, or because he thinks the current rule sucks and wants it gone. So he finds A, whisks him away to the capital, and spends his time making plots and whipping A into shape to become a ruler.

A is totally fine with this, not least of which because he sees B as his savior and then gets a massive crush on him. For a while, he gladly does whatever B asks of him, but as soon as talks about good political engagements come up, or even A making use of brothels, he acts out and causes inconveniences. B isn't stupid and realizes what this is about, and now has to walk a fine line between appeasing A so he behaves and not letting things get too far. This fails, obviously.

I'd like to play the back-and-forth between B trying valiantly to resist A's increasingly obvious seduction attempts until he snaps, does something to shut A up (kissing to start and then escalating into sex), which just encourages A to continue. Other kinks include: drunk sex, restraints, a general air of B being A's teacher in sex, and a LOT of impact play because A is a brat in general.

I'd like to play A! I'm way too lazy for icons nowadays so I'll be going iconless but you're free to do whatever you want in response. A is 16-17 if that's not your jam, but feel free to have B up to a couple of decades older, I'm totally game for a big age gap. Also, when I say porn with plot, I'd really like some build-up to all of this, that's a lot of the fun for me.

PM this journal or reply here if interested, thanks!
