I don't understand why some people seem so hellbent on making themselves unhappy. I promise you, you can RP without ever once looking at Wankgate and it will have exactly zero effect on you. I don't look at WG either and I'm perfectly happy not doing so.

There is nothing about WG that is essential to the RP experience and it's very easy to just avoid it.

I don't get why there's so much bemoaning about wankgate like there's a constant stream of innocent players being targeted 24/7. Chances are you and your friends will never be mentioned on there if you're not an obnoxious shitstain. All the hand-wringing and crying seems to chase players off more than actual happenings.

or maybe some people do get targeted for no reason. wg is not the arbiter of who is "toxic". one person being annoying to you does not mean they annoy everyone else or that they're even irredeemably awful, but wg being taken as fact can sure make it seem that way.

not everyone namedropped, even repeatedly, is at fault on a comm that takes petty shit too seriously and then memes the fuck out of it. but nice victim blaming.

You want to point out what "victims" have been through this in recent memory? The only ones I see getting wanked to the ends of the earth are the likes of Snow and Ink.

eh, there are definitely c and d level obnoxious people whose names come up a lot. i don't want to say those names because i don't want the thread to devolve, so namedropping them more really isn't necessary.

then there are people like that jamie person who likely isn't innocent but may also not be worth that much discussion and drama. i.e. going to the mods of a new game, pitchforks raised.

there was no way a question like that was genuine. you wanted them to name names so you could dig up reasons as to why it doesn't count. you wanted them to name names so you can go over a laundry list of all the petty bullshit that gets brought up about those names and pin it on them as justification for harassment.

Things people have been named and shamed over on wg include being too flaky, being too active, being considered unapproachable, preferring ships or smut over gen, being ooc, being a public mod, being an anonymous mod, having opinions on game mechanics, being heavily involved in game plots, and getting into inconsequential arguments on plurk and/or discord.

none of those things are toxic.

i was once brought up on wankgate because a family vacation overlapped with someone viciously ragging on another player in wankgate, and that...somehow meant it was me doing it?

i had never spoken to the player or interacted with them either oocly or icly and had in fact been offline the entire time focusing on my fun family vacation so i have no idea why they decided i was actually spending my time attacking them when i had zero reason to do so.

Exactly, I've been in LJ/DWRP since 2010 and if I've ever been mentioned there, it sure hasn't hurt my ability to RP one bit and I've done some pretty dumb/embarrassing stuff in my RP career. Same with my friends. The few people I know have been brought up deserved to have their bad behavior brought to light because they were treating people badly and either trying to cover it up or justify it.

Unless you're being an absolute shitheel, I can guarantee the majority of people don't care.

almost like individual anecdotes don't matter, and what matters is measurable results, and if that many people (and i seriously challenge you to say everyone who dislikes wankgate deserved to be harassed in some way) say "wankgate has made my rp experience on dreamwidth worse" maybe it doesn't matter what you personally went through, or if even a majority don't care. it doesn't need to exist.

okay but how do we know that the people who are saying that aren't in fact the guilty parties? i know people who would claim that wankgate made their rp experience worse except they were 100% the ones at fault and deserved what they brought on themselves.

this is garbage speculation. if that sincerely makes you feel better, that wg is karma or whatever, do what you will, but you don't have the moral high ground here.

it has hurt people. people have gotten wanked on for a litany of reasons that, most of the time, boil down to pissing off/annoying the wrong person. you don't get to decide it hasn't. many people who were harmless have left. many won't ever touch us. the community is too vitriolic and judgmental.

dwrp culture has absolutely evolved from airing petty annoyances to using "i don't like this person" for ban campaigns that follow people. beyond 1-2 recent instances, we don't have many high tier wankers anymore. it boils down to people not liking each other and the inability to be a fucking adult about it.

this sucks and this attitude sucks.

i agree with most of the complaints you guys have about wankgate, but i'm going to be honest that i think it's the least effective and the least terrible it's ever been right now.

seriously, think about it. when is the last time you saw a wankgate post in which people just picked out random players and shat on their characterization? cockhopping, yaoihounding, OOC - no one cares anymore. picking on people for petty things used to be routine. that was the point. now, if you start wank for something like that, it'll turn into meta-wank about how you are shit for caring about petty things.

and think of all the names that come up on wg again and again that have been coming up for actual years. how many are even banned in many places, let alone completely run out? hell, how many of them are really ostracized or even have trouble getting tags? i can think offhandedly of at least five people whose names come up all the time on wg or have for years and who have deep cr in games, are threading actively with many ships, and plenty of friends.

following people around with deets, as some wg-ers want to do (or "deets," I guess) is not stirring up much of anything. a new game opened and people didn't get pre-banned despite much sound and fury.

so, it sucks, sure. and i do agree, "just get over it" is kind of edgelordy. but it's also a bunch of hot air. the fact that most comm posts turn into how useless the comm is should tell you plenty.

One of my friends felt slighted a mutual friend. Their response? To prove their point by linking me to a bunch of ancient wankgate threads about our friend being overly focused on ships.

Another friend linked me to a demeaning thread about someone else to see if they were talking about me.

Yet another friend came to me upset because someone had linked them to a triggering discussion about race.

I also had a friend completely ghost on everyone after a third party aired their drama without their permission. They were the victim, not the perpetrator.

It's only easy to ignore if you or your friends aren't getting hurt.

sounds like the problem there isn't wankgate, it's that you have shitty friends.

multiple things can be problems. wankgate is a problem. having shitty friends is a problem. and because both of those problems exist in tandem, it's dumb to insist that people can just ignore wankgate and never be affected by it.
