i think it's telling that so far it seems we're all ... older. i got into rp when i was 17 and i was rping with other people my age

I wonder if that's the platform though. Does DW skew to older fans? Maybe tumblr has a younger set, or maybe younger fans just aren't into RP because the platform isn't there. You kinda need a journal/forum to RP properly (ok people do it on tumblr and elsewhere but fucked if I know how). Also the fact that DW is shit on mobile has gotta be cutting a lot of younger fans out. Most the young people I know are not connected to their laptop in the way I am and my gen are. They're connected to their phones.

it is definitely the platform. most of us are here from when LJ was a thing and we don't bring much new people, regardless of age, simply because fandom isn't here

We're also jaded judgey fuckers that have been burned too many times to welcome people like we used to. Those of us in DWRP for 10+ years have developed senses of writing that cringe at teenage writing. We've forgotten how to do self-indulgent fun because we're afraid of being judged. The cultural barrier is VERY difficult to break through.

Also I wonder how people find us? DW doesn't exactly advertise, especially about the RP. You almost need to know someone and as we age, we know less youngblood.

...and I feel awkward asking someone half my age if they want to make barbies on the internet kiss or fight to the death.

i don't know if this is how all people find us, but i've brought people here from other platforms just by saying i prefer rping on dw, and they go oh, what's that?

it's pretty much that simple since our format is, frankly, just better for rp than most others. i've only once had someone decide it was too much effort, but that was someone who would have been slow even by very lax standards

we mostly grew up together, so age has shifted higher and most people who are younger these days do not want to interact online with adults at all...tumblr kids have it in their head you can't even talk to someone who isn't your exact age sometimes?

that attitude is so bizarre to me. i first came into fandom as a teen in the 90s when the majority of fandom was much older, and i'm so grateful to my older fandom friends for teaching me how to participate respectfully in fandom and just how to navigate it in general. i was able to not be a teenage fanbrat thanks to them and i really appreciate the fact that i had them around to (gently) teach me what was and wasn't appropriate.

same...tumblr seems to have shifted to the mentality that any adult in a fandom space is a predator if they interact with someone younger than them tho
