Premise

You've been living your life up until this point, ignorant of other worlds, other universes, other dimensions and you've probably never given much thought to them other than "Wouldn't that be cool?" You go about your business, doing your everyday tasks. Maybe you're a normal human being trying to live life from day to day, a hero who keeps having to save their world again and again, or a villain, who just hasn't seen the glory of his day.

On one particular night, not unlike all the others you've had, you go to sleep and have a vivid dream. A scape that speaks to you, that warms your heart, makes you feel good in all the right places, but then a dark foreboding presence clouds all that good. It wraps itself around your throat, your body and your heart. You can't breathe as it makes it's way into your lungs.

You feel as those any good in you will be wiped out. You see yourself commanding battalions of twisted monsters, who you know will cause heartache and pain to all those who stand in your way. Then you see them, the most important person to you in your life. They've chosen the other side, the light. You feel that need to be in their light, that bright warmth that has always been your guide but the darkness in you doesn't want to let you go.

You come upon them, quick and swift. Your weapon pierces their heart and that look in their eyes, the betrayal. You feel so heartbroken, that you wake up with a gasp, disoriented and staring at the ceiling as you try to catch your breath. You swallow heavily, sunlight filters into your eyes and you reach up with a hand to shield them.

Only you can't, your hand hits the ceiling and then you notice it. You're trapped in something, small and without a lot of space to move around. At first you panic, but then as soon as you push against the ceiling with all your strength, it pops open and you sit up. Looking around, there are coffins everywhere. Beautiful white wicker coffins with flowers on top of them. You also appear to be in a forest.

Of course, you're confused, but then you look down at your lap and see an envelope with your name written on the front. You open it and it read it:

Dear Otherworlder,

We imagine you are now very perplexed, and wish to know where you are. We suppose we should tell you where, because there are important things to discuss. You are in the town of Brass Petal, a place still relatively new but thriving with life. We have been watching you for quite some time, and we need you to conduct... a little experiment for us. We realize this may not be what you want, but you are here and for now, there is no way of sending you back. You'll just have to deal.

To further explain, this is the real world: Brass Petals, and then we have another world, the virtual world. Yes, it's exactly what you're thinking. Virtual reality, except you can travel the internet, inside computers but it's all very real, my friend. Everything feels real, for all intents and purposes, it is real. You can do anything your heart desires, and make discoveries around every corner. The only thing you can't do is die.

You'll find that Brass Petals is a beautiful place to live in. We have set you off with a care package to get you started in town and you'll find an apartment or house has been set up for you. You'll find directions there, but feel free to change it. There are many things you can do in town, However, you'll find the virtual world has a lot more beauty to it. It has a lot more to do, the possibilities are endless. You can be character in a mass mmorpg, climb mountains, or write novels with just a thought or gain knowledge of any subject you wish in a short amount of time. If you've seen the movie, the Matrix. You may understand just a drop in the magnitude of truths.

Take yourself to the Chamberlin Hotel in town. There, you will meet our beautiful buxom blonde, Charlie O'Riley and she'll give you a messenger bag with a laptop, a high-tech tablet about the size of a man's large hand, gorgeous cellphone for our network, 500 C or coin as we've nicknamed it, it's on a credit card, worth 1,500 U.S.D and replenishes monthly. You'll need to get a job otherwise to acquire more c. You can upgrade your tablet and computer, buy charms, pay for the cost of living in your new home, and of course, there's always the highly sought after food and drink.

How to get into the virtual world is fairly easy. The tablet you acquire is your reality switcher, yes, it works on our network too but I wouldn't use it for that all the time. It's main purpose is switching between the realities. You have a clunky silver bracelet with two gem indentions, it comes with a USB cord. It has a little U.S.D port. You also have two gem encrusted buttons, the first is red and the second is blue. You hook up the bracelet to the tablet, then press the blue button to get into the virtual world.

Your body will turn into tiny little particles and you'll feel a slight burning sensation. Then you'll go trough the screen and end up in a house in the virtual world that is very much like your own, except everything will be tinged a slight blue hue. To get back, you will find the exact same set up and must push the red button. The bracelet cannot be taken off. If you lose your tablet, you can buy one on either side.

It's important that you use these two worlds. It's vital to our experiment. Please enjoy your stay and above all else, do not get lost on the super information highway. We'd hate to have to go looking for you.

Regards,
The Dad Paradox

hello! this is an interesting game and looks like it'll fill a gap which has gone long unfulfilled for many of us.

some questions/suggestions:
1. the "dear otherworlder" letter is a little wordy, esp on a game ad and journal profile. for ease of reading, perhaps you could make its element collapsible, or link to the premise page from the ad and profile.
2. do you have a mod contact page, or some easily noticeable way that players or prospective players can reach you at?
3. just a general remark - there are assorted bits in the writeups that a proofreader would have caught. it seems "virtual plain and the reality plain" are in reference to planes, for example, unless characters are expected to run like gazelles out in the wild?

+1 on the interest in the game! I just wanted to add that I would be very happy to have my character run like a gazelle across the plains.

Yay! I'm so excited. Please sign up when you come. We'd be happy to have you. And yes, you can run like a gazelle and do anything you wish in the virtual world!

Thanks for pointing it out! Give me a few hours and I'll fix the journal nav and info pages heavily. I'm going to shorten the letter somehow, someway. And add a bit more information for players.

Mod anon, if you put the letter on an arrival page or even the premise page, you could still include it without it taking up so much real estate on your ad, if that helps.

That's what I'mma do. I should have looked at this first. I'll put a link to the premises instead. Whoo.

another anon here who thought the premise was pretty long for something that's supposed to be a quick blurb to get people interested. i can see why you'd be reluctant to just take the letter out of said blurb entirely, since without it there's no mention of the virtual world stuff that i assume is a big part of the game, so i'd suggest either:

1) put the whole letter on a different page, like an arrival info page or something, and sum it up in your ad blurb like "you find a letter in you lap. reading it tells of accomodations made for you, and a virtual world" or something to that effect. just tease the ideas so people are curious enough to come look for more defail.

2) take out the letter entirely (beyond mention of waking up to find a letter, that's a pretty good way to end the IC part of the blurb) and find some other way to work mention of the important stuff into that part of the ad

I'm so glad you guys are speaking up about this. I tend to get wordy and long-winded! Something that's not always a good thing. Being concise can be good too.

I'm going to put it on the game mechanics page and leave a link in the first section of the ad afterward. Thank you so much. I want to keep the letter, I imagine our experimenters and experimented on would want it explained to them to some degree. Charlie explains the rest at the hotel. Which has no rooms, just gadgets, food/drink and keys to apartments/houses.

Thank you! I'm so happy you think so, hon.

I could try doing that but I'm not a coder unfortunately. I actually realized I need to edit a bit heavily because I added a third gem to the bracelet when I realized we needed it. It might confuse players if I don't add a bit more. I'll figure out some way to make it shorter though. I promise. Maybe just a complete overhaul.

2. Yes. It's a dropbox, there's a link or you could ask questions on the faq page too. It works eitherway and I will respond promptly.

3. I know, I'll go read everything and figure out what needs fixed/changed. lol, sure, they could but I meant planes I think. I'm sorry about that. It's one of the words that confuses me, even though I'm a native English speaker.

Thanks for the questions! I'm very excited about this actually. I had it up on insanejournal ages ago, but no one really bit. I think dreamwidth is a better avenue for it. It was called 5thoperative before, but the story has changed and yeah. Anyway, thanks. Please feel free to ask anything else.

Regards to #2, 'dropbox' doesn't give the impression that it is for contacting the mod. Connotation with the Dropbox service (which I'd wager is what comes to mind first) aside, it also creates confusion when you have another separate page for people dropping from the game. Maybe renaming the page to 'mod contact' or even 'modmail' will resolve the issue.

You should remember to turn off custom comment pages too!

I fixed it. No problem. I hadn't really thought of that. I realize it could be confusing indeed.

I did! I'm going through everything and fixing them now even. Trying to catch all mistakes and the like. I kept forgetting to turn them off. Just keep helping me find mistakes! lol Nah, I'm good. I tend to reread everything a thousand times to fix all mistakes. Much as I can but I'm so appreciative of the help. I really am. <3

Dropbox always makes me think of the cloud service too. To be fair though, I think that's IJ vernacular for a contact post, it's just not one we use too commonly in DW.

I'm so used to being on insanejournal, but there's never any interesting games and the game ideas I come up with can be a little oddball. Yeah. I'm gonna stay on DW and remember mod contact from now on.

It wouldn't be appreciated, but you possibly give them pizza and they'd thank you? Maybe even give you a golden ticket to Charlie's factory.
