Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I understand what you're saying but I've also been a bit trepidatious about writing a starter on my top levels for fear of alienating someone who may not like the setting/location or scene or who can't justify their character being in the location I set the starter in.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
at this point, anon, i'd say it's an option for at least one or two memes. either you keep putting up blank top levels and getting nothing from anyone, or you put up a couple with starters and alienate people who by your version are already not tagging you anyway. i mean, if you're not getting anything or tags at all, why not try something different and see if you get some nibbles?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not putting blank top levels though. I am writing several sentences about preferences and links to info and stuff...

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
and if that's not working, then try putting up a starter. people are lazy, anon. they don't want to follow your links to journal stuff. it's more work. so throw up a starter. if people like it, they'll probably go to your journal to see what your preferences are so they can tag you. it's weird backwards logic, but at this point, if you have no one tagging you, you're not alienating or chasing anyone off.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
True, anon. The worst that can happen is things stay the same and the best is getting more tag outs.

I will give your idea a try. Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
preferences alone wouldn't really catch my interest at all unless it indicated some interest in playing a specific thing i really want to play. if you're that against writing actual starters, then at least a brief elevator pitch about your character or some general ideas about scenarios you'd like to play would catch my attention better than preferences and links to info pages. i need a reason to be looking into your character more in the first place, or some indication that you have actual ideas and you're not just gonna leave me with all the work of setting things up by going "lol i'm cool with anything!"

but being resistant to the idea of writing general toplevel starters isn't a great look. your current tactic isn't working, but you'd rather stick with it and blame everyone else than try anything different? besides, it's a writing hobby unfortunately plagued by people who don't want to actually write anything. i'm definitely more interested in strangers that demonstrate from the getgo that they're willing to actually write and come up with ideas and set the scene.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Resistant? Not at all. I was more worried about alienating potential players than anything. I really don't understand the judgmental and accusatory tone you're taking here. I never said I wouldn't write starters but that I was worried it'd do more damage than good. I fail to see how the two equate but if you insist on holding that viewpoint then please go ahead.

I'm more than willing to write something up if the consensus isn't that I'd be shut down for the setting I chose or as someone said below offer an OOC/wild card option to hash out anything that may not fit. I hadn't thought to do that and I will certainly give it a try.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
they're a different anon than the one that you were getting mad at before (me), so don't paint every anon that doesn't agree with you with the same brush. also, you're not going to get sugar coated messages all the time here, and when a lot of your complaints boil down to 'i could do a thing or two that would make getting tags easier, but i don't really want to' then no one's going to pat your butt over it. defensive replies aren't going to make people want to help you.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Again please show me where I said I wouldn't do the things suggested to make tags easier that didn't include completely changing canons?

I've accepted the advice of adding starters (which I hadn't done for fear of alienating people) and adding wildcard/OOC options.

Once again I fail to see how not wanting to completely change canons (as my current canon is not character diverse and therefore has no real options that wouldn't be as nameless/unknown as my current one) equates to "I don't really want to". I'm also not expecting or asking for sugarcoated replies so once again I fail to comprehend your logic here, I am simply looking for ideas and I was given a few that I can definitely do without having to sacrifice the large time investment of canon/character research, icon making, and so on.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
anon, you don't have to 'change canons'. you could just add to it. most of us play multiple characters and rotate between them on memes or toss a few up.

stop trying to argue your anal retentiveness with anons. it doesn't go over well. just ignore and move on. pick another canon that has icons people have already made. the fact that you do seem fixated on one canon says enough. you don't have to drop your fave canon. but you could look at picking up another. your inability to want to do that and to stick with something that people probably don't want to play against is going to net you no results. don't say you weren't advised otherwise.

you sound completely insufferable. maybe that's why you don't get any tags.

more like it sounds like as or some other aus.

"abnormalities include verbosity; abrupt transitions; literal interpretations and miscomprehension of nuance"

which yes can be insufferable when trying to communicate or navigate around but empathy and patience can go a long way too nonny

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, you shouldn't have to change canons if you don't want to. however, as someone else in a similar position, a side effect of having a limited muselist is limited opportunities for rp compared to other players. it sucks, but that's how it is

that said, other anons gave you some very good advice that you seem to have taken to heart. good luck, and don't let it get to you if it takes a while to get some bites

+1

(Anonymous) 2019-08-27 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
playing from a more obscure canon means you're going to have to put in more effort to get tags. this is just a fact. i have to work twice as hard with my dude from an older canon than i do with my girl from a currently popular one because he doesn't have that instant recognition factor that she does. i love playing him but i know that whenever i want to meme with him, chances are i'm going to get fewer bites simply because people don't know who he is.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
they're not being judgmental or accusatory, they're reading as entirely neutral. the most they said was that being resistant to doing more when what you've done doesn't work isn't a good look. you're coming off a bit defensive yourself.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe what you're writing is not interesting.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
so write a few options for starters and leave an extra wildcard option with an ooc note that people are free to throw their own starter at you or PM you if they want to hash out something more specific. they have the same options as if they were hitting up a blank toplevel, but you also have a chance of snagging people intrigued by your starters.

besides, everyone tagging out has the same anxieties about "oh but what if they don't like/can't work with my starter and just ignore it, what if i put in the effort of writing it for nothing". if you're putting starters out there for anyone to respond to, you're at least casting a wider net than the people writing starters for specific characters that may or may not be interested.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-26 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I hadn't thought of it like that but it's a good viewpoint. I will start adding starters (with the options available to modify or change as needed) and see how things go. Thank you.

I've had some luck with writing a top level with pref and the like, and then commenting to myself with open starters? It def depends on the meme tho. Inevitably, someone will think it's weird you put starters on an open meme where no one else is doing so. But those people wouldn't have tagged you anyway.
