I’ve been wanting to try getting into this series for the longest time and finally found a place I could watch the anime. The problem is there was like three different seasons? I think anyway. I was just wondering if any other anon’s would be able to tell me what was the best way to start?

You're looking at two separate animes here. One is Katsugeki, which is one season long and is more action-oriented, while the other is Hanamaru, which is two seasons long and mostly slice of life. Starting with either one is fine since their storylines are completely different. Have fun, anon!

I figured since they both had different names, it was going to be like "such and such is the first season and then you need to go to this other one for the second" But that makes it a lot easier! Thank you, anon! :'>

Is there anything else I would need to get into to have a good Touken experience? Or would the anime be enough?

You're welcome! Always happy to see more fans here! But as to your next question, that depends. I think the anime plus the game dialogue is enough to start with. If you find that you want an even more in-depth experience (especially as the animes do fail to flesh characters out), I highly recommend checking out the stageplays and musicals as well! There's a full list of that at ~highheeling, IIRC. I've heard that there are also manga adaptations, but I haven't looked into those yet.

da, there are manga anthologies, essentially a collection of self-contained short stories done by various doujin authors collected into official anthologies, but as far as i know, no one's really scanlated them. i could be wrong, though!

as for op, i'm super curious about who you're considering!

I’m honestly not sure yet. I only heard about this series vaguely through the grape vine. I know everyone is essentially a personified famous sword or something along those likes, and at one point I saw this guy that had an eyepatch that looked really cool. So then I was like you know what? If I can find the anime I’m gonna see if I enjoy it and see if someone clicks!

So I’m not sure yet, but knowing me I’ll end up having a hard time picking and end up wanting to try out a bunch lol.

I'm always down for Dategumi things. I guess Tsuru is less relevant since he's post-Masa but the Date swords are his children and historical accuracy can't stop me when I have time travel on my side.

You have seriously been so much help, anon! I’ll see how I like the anime’s first. They give me a fun vibe that reminds me a bit of s few other anime’s I’ve watched so I’m hoping I really enjoy them.

And stageplays/musicals are so my jam.

I didn’t expect it to hook me in so easily. My guess is because back in the day I got really into peacemaker kurogane so now I’m like “hey I know what sword you belong to!!” For shinsengumi related characters at least lol

Different anon, but since you like stageplays and musicals I wanted to add that there are a few stages centered around Sengoku era/Date Masamune with a good amount of Shokudaikiri content! Likewise, if you enjoyed Peacemaker Kurogane and its interpretation of the captains, there are 2 musicals focused on the Shinsengumi and their swords that I really can't recommend enough.

Also re: above mentioned manga anthologies, you can find a good deal of them translated if you search touken ranbu on bato.to!

ayrt here since I see little point in remaining anon, but I just wanted to let you know that you haven't been a bother at all! I love meeting more people from this fandom (since I also got into it pretty late, so) and I'm always down with spreading sword hell everywhere!

I'm laughing because I just met him recently since I took a small break to finish the second season and I love him. He was great. (also he got bonus points for being voiced by my favorite VA)
