Tbh the gameplay is actually really good, i wish non porn games ripped some of its ideas off

the ridiculousness of that situation wasn't so much the rance player insisting the game had Good Gameplay Actually (i don't know, or care, if it does or doesn't) it was more that he brought that up to defend how trashy the game was, so it briefly became a meme around these parts.

how so? i'm asking as an anon who's never played.

well, each game has different gameplay from one another. id recommend just reading the alicesoft/rance wiki if you're curious about gameplay, but the one id say is really innovative is rance x, the last game in the series. the premise is that the demon armies are invading the world, so every country in the setting is banding together to fight back. so each character you use in your party is a representative of each of the major nations.

to get every character from the series in, they take a really scaled back approach, with each character only having two or three moves, and each character you recruit increases the overall power of their army. you get new characters by passing over certain tiles in dungeons (which are designed more like a series of branching paths rather than an actual rpg dungeon), beating fights quickly, or doing certain story events. the game has a ton of content and replayability based on which countries you save from the demons in which order, which characters you recruit, etc, and it has 3 major routes and about 15 different endings. Combat's very snappy, too, and the idea of the game is to replay it over and over. You're actually expected to lose your first couple of times, or at least get one of the worse endings.

It's a game I think is legitimately ambitious and has neat ideas for how to portray that kind of 'grand conflict' in a game while still technically being an rpg, but it's chained to a hentai game series and kind of requires the investment of the games before it to really work, since the character stuff is very barebones since it expects you to know who everyone is.

note that none of this is a defense of any of the obvious issues with the series' content, i just think its cool.
