chortles fatly

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i used to be a JP>EN translator for drama shows and man this "translators are gods and you should bend the knee at every opportunity" attitude is so weird to me. chill out. we're not that cool and you're not winning prizes for being the Best Weeb.

i don't think it's about being the "best weeb" in this case. the translators in this case were being strict, but it's because they actually wanted people to support the game in a genre that tends to struggle with getting decent sales numbers (even if dialovers is one of the better-selling series overall, that's not saying much). rejet themselves aren't keen on fan translations, iirc, and their CEO (rightfully or not) has brought up piracy problems before, so it's entirely possible that going more public with the patch (which the leak basically resulted in now) could've led to legal trouble, too. i'm not sure i can fault them for being upset and pulling the plug on future projects considering all that.

nayrt

don’t get me wrong, otoge translations has every right to be upset about what happened, but i feel they really should’ve expected that someone would’ve leaked the patch eventually.

some people in the vn community, like the guy who leaked the patch, get ridiculously angry if you suggest they try to support the creators instead of outright pirating shit in a niche industry. it’s shitty for sure, but unfortunately not surprising.

going by the post they did expect it, they just hoped that it wouldn't happen. a fair few people actually did go to them with proof that they bought the game, for what it's worth.

the guy who leaked the patch isn't even into the otoge community, is he? i'm not sure if he's into the vn community, but it sounds mostly like it's a guy who made the program for patching vita games for translations and got angry that anyone would actually want people to support the company who made the games their patches are for instead of keeping any and all patches free (and implicitly encouraging piracy). with bigger games that's whatever, but with a genre with such a small market (dialovers more, blood's vita version barely broke 4k in its opening week and iirc newer releases haven't been doing much better), that's pretty shitty and i'm not sure i can fault the team behind the patch for pulling the plug on future projects after a leak like that.

+1

I'm usually all for laughing at stuck up translators who think they're god's gift to fandom, but I think their unhappiness and decision to pull the patch is fair. Only wanting to share the translations with people who actually supported a fairly niche industry isn't some sort of power trip.

But... I think it's passes the point of optimism and lands squarely in the realm of naivety to think that this wasn't going to happen. If more than maybe 15 people are invested in a project then the patch is going to get leaked. I guarantee that a few of the 50 or so people that bought the game had already privately shared the patch with others before this happened.

being fluent in japanese doesn't make you a weeb.... like, call them out, but let's remember what the word actually means

being fluent in japanese and using your skills to translate anime things probably makes you a weeb

being fluent in japanese and not having any interest in anime definitely means you're not a weeb

da, anon, people call themselves weebs all the time that don't meet that strict definition. the word is barely an insult any longer, stop taking offense on someone else's behalf.

Re: VISUAL NOVELS

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
dda, it IS an insult when people use it in reference to literally anything japanese.

who gives a shit? like i say this as someone whom the majority of the media i digest is japanese and i'm packing as we speak to go to an anime convention

it's a nonsense word that means ultimately nothing. it's not a slur, it's not a grave insult.

idk where that anon has been but most fandom id terms old and new have an insulting connotation to them or were originally straight up insults

geek, nerd, fanboy, weeb, otaku, fujoshi, the usage of garbage/trash, etc.

i think neckbeard is the only one that's mostly still viewed as purely derogatory rather than something people proudly or self-deprecatingly call themselves

"who gives a shit?"

uh, maybe some japanese people? why is this so difficult for you to grasp. just because it doesn't affect you personally doesn't mean it doesn't and shouldn't affect anyone else. chill for half a second, you're the only one mad here
