this sounds like it would work well and could be a lot of fun!

i would downplay the reboot jargon / computer setting in the premise and leave the details of that to the faq. the whole point of the show was that the computer thing made for a lot of puns and jokes but was treated as very meta, and mainframe felt more like a futuristic space city than anything, complete with diners, apartments, etc, which dwrp loves.

be sure to put a HEAVY emphasis on the games. i would put a game as the test drive every month, personally, and make sure people not familiar with the show know that a game means your character is suddenly in a wild west setting, for example, and needs to "reboot" into wild west clothing + role (you oocly pick that your character might not icly chose, see: enzo as a princess) and help stop a train robbery or w/e to win the game before they're allowed back into mainframe. and if they lose, that part of the city is destroyed and everyone in the game turns into a worm creature, which is pretty good ic incentive to participate. this would be the fun part of your game (weren't the games the fun part of each episode? they were for me), so you want it front and center.

"Either actual video games or games related to canons of current characters" I think this is a bad idea and would do the opposite tbh. nothing else would be more awkward than a vidya character ending up in their own game, especially if your players aren't okay with fourth walling. using knock offs like reboot did of mad max or resident evil etc would probably be fine with everyone though, as long as the setting is generalized and the characters have different names.

I would be willing to concede to the jargon aspect, but I'm not certain I could really "downplay" the part where they're inside a computer because that's kind of the point of the game. It would explain a lot of elements unique to this particular setting, is sort of crucial to the overall plot, and in my opinion, would retain those features of games that drwp loves while still setting it apart from other futuristic space cities by allowing for slightly unique mechanics.

You make an excellent point about 4th walling that I hadn't considered. I think I could do the parody/knockoff route. It would require a bit more creativity on my part, but the challenge honest sounds like fun and I would also allow for players to submit their own Game ideas as well, making it feel even more collaborative.

no problem! what i meant by downplay was that it's just funny to me every time I hear reboot summarized described as "what's REALLY going on inside your computer!" because it's not presented that way at all in the show, outside of the lingo. like they're sprites, not people, but the main cast still look and act like people, down to eating and showering. it feels more like star wars than tron, if that makes sense. less computer and more fantasy, even though they're in a computer. for the premise, i just meant throw a one line "inside a computer" summary as you would, but make sure people not familiar with reboot also know it's still basically a space city in practice, if not in jargon, if that makes sense.

the idea of taking submissions is fabulous, and i love your responses to everyone else, too. if you've never modded in dwrp before or haven't for a while, know that game success really hinges on pretty coding and first tdm participation / popularity more than premise these days. i look forward to seeing what you do with this!

Ah! Yeah, I definitely want to make it accessible to non canon familiar players while throwing nods for the old school fans. I get what you’re saying and I do agree.

That’s very kind of you to say. I have never head modded a game before, I’m not afraid to admit, but I’ve been in dwrp for more than ten years and have aided in a lot of behind the scenes work in that time.

I’m also a very visual person so I definitely understand that can be a huge draw for players and have it high on initial creation priority lists. To me, something that promises a lot of fun and a more creative premise with plenty of player-based decisions and opportunities seems like the best way to attract new players.

I do hope I can either get this off the ground in time, or at least inspire someone to do something similar.
