yeah, this one's more a case of the translator missing that the word has very different connotations in most of the western world than it does in japan. most of the problems with the new translation boil down to that, from what i've seen so far.

it's a pretty unfortunate translation choice in this case, though.

I disagree the line implies that. "Cultist" isn't the same as "lefitist" and Aum Shinrikyo was built around religious ideas and doomsday prophecies and not a political ideals. The use of "leftist" obscures the reference because its not a term most would associate with a cult like Aum Shinrikyo.

find me a single source other than your ass that describes aum shinrikyo as "leftist", i'll wait

yeah I don't buy this - the word used is literally a loanword of 'Sect', which has no left/right leaning, and given how fucking literal the rest of the translation has been, using leftist instead of 'sect' or 'cult' shows that the translator made a deliberate choice in inserting that term in there.

yes. yes it is. because a professional translator isn't only supposed to know language, they are also supposed to know both cultures they are working with to choose the correct word according to context. idk enough japanese history to know if what you said is true or not, but even if it is, it still makes it a horrible translation because it is going for literal meaning as if this was google translate instead of translating the concept
