I hear a lot of people talking about it, but I haven't kept up with the game at all...what's so bad about Agartha? Can someone give me a rundown of why it's considered such a mess?

there's some very extreme sexual stuff in it that makes it feel more like a hardcore r18 doujin than a canon chapter, like men being milked for semen, and plenty of fate fans including myself feel like it sinks to a new level of tasteless even for a franchise that has crestworms.

like as bad as the crestworms and their implications were, at least sakura's sexual abuse was treated seriously (aside from some ehhhh dialog in hf's sex scenes, which were famously not written by nasu) and given the gravity that kind of thing should, but in agartha it's just one big horny joke.

yep. my issues with agartha go beyond just the content in it, but there being so much doujin-esque sexual stuff that's used just for shock value and/or fetish fuel and not examined critically or treated with the necessary gravity is a big contributing factor. knowing what the deal with agartha's main antagonist is and what explanations for this type of content crop up honestly just makes it feel even worse.

it also drags down several pre-existing characters for the sake of crude jokes or fetish bait. it says a lot when you have a character who, in their original story, dealt with a sexual abuser who was clearly framed as an awful person suddenly trying to enable a little kid to be a lech, and that's far from the only instance of questionable handling of that type of stuff.

on top of what the anon above mentioned about agartha having a lot of questionable sexual content that isn't treated with the gravity it should, it's also just... badly written and steeped in a lot of crude stuff.

it's hard to get into much of it without significant spoilers, but basically while there's an alright foundation for the chapter's story and a couple conceptually neat characters, it's all dragged down by the writer, hazuki minase, not being able to tackle the topics being addressed without turning them into a mess that reads like something out of a stereotypical fetish-y light novel. it drags down characters who were perfectly fine in other writers' hands, and it hurts the chapter itself so badly that its lead character needed an unusually lengthy interlude *and* a later appearance in another event mostly written by someone else where she's handled much better.

were you around for the prisma illya event? the writer for agartha is the same guy responsible for that one, and it should give you a pretty good idea of what level of quality to expect (though agartha being intended as a serious story chapter instead of a lighter crossover event makes it even worse).
