the question is just if you'd be fine with being second choice once the prime interest is gone.

Sorry for being snippy. I read the part about "you assume she only wants to play with her friend" as assuming that her being too busy was not the same thing as her only caring about her established rp partner, like she was giving excuses rather than being honest. Either way though, I'd still play with her, and I wouldn't think of it as sloppy seconds or anything like that. I mean, what's the alternative scenario here for Karen? That she drops her existing psls to make time for some rando who plays the same character? She resigns herself to never playing with that character again once her first rp partner moves on because anyone else would be sloppy seconds? There's no reason in this situation to withhold playing the ship with her unless I'm legit not interested in it anymore, which would be fair enough.

If I understand your comments correctly, Karen and her rp partner had started their PSL before you contacted her.

If so, you weren't 'second choice', you just happened to reach out to her later. If you and the rp partner had contacted Karen at the exact same time and then you had been rejected, maybe then you could think of yourself as 'second best'.

Who knows, perhaps Karen ends up liking your interpretation of the character more.
