All food service sucks. At least you’re resorting to just bearing it rather than begging for handouts on the internet though so good for you.

unfortunately there isn't a universal answer to this because franchise ownership and direct management makes such a huge difference that working between different mcdonaldses even in the same county is going to be a different experience

My friend worked her way up at Chipotle and now makes $50kish as a manager. But she does have to work a lot since she's been a manager.

Otherwise all the Targets around me are hiring starting at 12.50/hr. Some of them have little food shops/cafes.

Target isn't terrible but they aren't unionized AFAIK, and when I was working there they pushed us HARD not to vote to unionize. It was pretty ridiculous.

outside of grocery stores, i cant think of a single fast food or retail store that is unionized tbh. ive watched anti-union videos at pretty much every place i've worked in retail, it's super common. which doesnt excuse it but just that its not really an exclusive problem.

I would still advise OP to try to get into one. Nothing's worse than being "fired" without actually being fired aka them just cutting your hours to nothing and letting you stop coming in.

i would too! but just pointing out that in the united states, retail workers having unions is, unfortunately, extremely uncommon and OP might not able to find a place where they can join one.

also just as a heads up if that ever happens again, if your hours are cut drastically you may be able to file for unemployment even though you weren't actually fired.

the US is indeed an unregulated bonanza of capitalism in its absolute worst form! workers have pathetically few rights, and even those we do have are routinely ignored or lied about (and there's little recourse when this happens, since exploited workers don't have the time and resources to seek legal remedies, and most corporations have mandated arbitration that makes class action difficult if not impossible)

Visit a store during the dinner rush and dine in to get a feel for what the mood of the employees is like, and you'll have an idea of whether it's a shitty one or not.

Fast food is the kind of work that will 100% vary based on the managers, so no singular chain or brand is gonna be better than one or other.

the management of the location will make or break how shitty the experience is.

that aside, if i was basing it on how annoying customers could potentially be because of menu options, i'd go with cane's. it has to be a bit easier to know your menu is basically just chicken fingers.

if your area has starbucks, i've had decent luck with them

I've worked for Starbucks for 7 1/2 years, and while the work can suck sometimes, you get pretty great benefits. PPO health insurance options, 401k, stock that they give you free, paid sick time that's separate from vacation time, and if you don't have your BA yet, you can attend Arizona State for free (you can even do online if you don't live in Tempe, AZ).

I've also had good luck with managers who are compassionate. At 2 weeks in, a close (but not immediate) family member passed away, and my boss at the time sent me home saying, "Just let me know when you'll be back."

has anybody here ever worked at culver's? what are your experiences?

i've eaten at a few different ones in the midwest and the employees seem pretty happy to work there. i like that my local one has recycling bins too, idk if others do that too.

tim horton's employees are always very nice and cheerful too, in my experience.

really well-known places like mcdonald's, taco bell, etc are always rushing and i don't bother with them anymore because they'll frequently forget or mess up at least one thing.

i blame the companies more than the employees though, i know some of them are anal about finishing orders ASAP!!!! but it just messes up orders and morale tbh. i know somebody who worked at taco bell 5 years or so ago and she complained about how her managers would complain about it a lot. idr what term she used, average order time quotas or something? iirc they're timed before customers even finish placing their order, so if somebody's hemming and hawwing about what they want, employees still get scolded for it.
