Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Current and Former Mods

What were your worst failures or best learning experiences?

I'm feeling discouraged as a mod for reasons, and I want to hear other mods' stories.

It's been a long time since I modded and probably never will again, but here's what the best learning experience was. Do NOT trust your fellow mods. I've had many great mods I worked with, and when you've got a good team together, you can continue a game near indefinitely.

On the flip side, I've dealt with one who broke their own rules to exceed the character limit by creating an alternate persona claiming to be a new player, a mod who completely fucked off after she became obsessed with SPN and left me to run the whole thing when I'd been only a list mod before, and some chick who probably was bipolar and threatened to delete the comm every other week (Her exact phrasing being like I'LL BURN THIS PLACE DOWN!!!1!) till I finally changed the password on the mod account. And the last time I was a list mod a couple years back, the main mod got upset when I wouldn't ship our characters just the way she wanted, and kicked me out claiming I was "too slow" in updating the lists...after taking a whole day to update them. She then lied to the comm saying I'd stepped down because I had too many other commitments.

Worst failure experienced was not communicating enough with my players. I had several plots crash and burn because I played things too close to the chest and didn't leave enough clues or ask for enough input from the players. They were left very confused and complaining they didn't even know how to play out the plot because they felt so out of the loop.

I've never had a mod team member go rogue, but I have had some go a little AWOL. It sucks to pick up the slack but it's clearly not the worst thing that could go wrong.

The resentment from players who aren't playing by the rules and get called out for it never gets totally easy to take when attempt to villainize you or your mod team on the anon comms. Which is inevitable I suppose but damn it also doesn't stop being tiring.

But beyond all that my biggest effing bummers are when we can't drum up enough interest to just SEE if our idea for a game would be as great as we think it could be... I still have so much heart for game ideas that have never gotten off the ground.

How many games have you tried to get off the ground that didn't make it?

Depends where you start counting from I guess. Only one that I worked on with someone all the way up until after test driving stage that just couldn't get enough players to keep running on it's own steam after it officially opened. Other's have just been great ideas co-mods and I have jotted down, had long impassioned discussions about how to run, maybe even outlined in some google docs, but ultimately never turned into anything more than an account name to squat on.

I love ttrpgs and game mechanics as much as story premises, icon making and css styles so part of me just likes to dream up these things, but I still wish just ONE of them could get good run.
