Can anyone recommend me an Idol series that isn’t Love Live? Preferably one that either has an anime or translated content available. I have an iPhone so downloading Japanese only games is a goddamn hassle. Boys or girls, I don’t really care.

pripara is one of my favourites but it's also aimed at little girls so it's very tropey and does a lot of "friendship solves everything." pripara is like another world/theme park thing that girls can go to where they can become idols with magical transforming outfits. all the characters are really cute and the songs are catchy. it ran for 4 years so there's like 200 episodes lmao

from the same franchise, there's pretty rhythm rainbow live. it follows a group of girls who do ice skating idol shows. there's more of a solid plot and the characters a lot more rounded in comparison to pripara. there's around 50 eps so it's more manageable too.

on the boy idol side, there's idolish7. there's a mobile game, one season of anime already out and a 2nd in the works. it shows some of the hardships that come with being an idol and it's very melodramatic but it's still fun. one of the best things about i7 is that there's a wide range of ages so there are 20-somethings and not just high schoolers

shounen hollywood is also another idol that focuses on how difficult being an idol actually is. a bunch of misfits get scouted and form an idol group. the anime follows their struggles through getting hatemail and having to say embarrassing catchphrases in public

while it's technically not idol but star-myu is also a lot of fun. it's the complete opposite of shounen hollywood and is super over the top and campy. if you can get over the second hand embarrassment of the boys randomly breaking out into song and dance, it's a really fun anime. there's two seasons out already with a third coming soon

sorry I wasn't sure what kind of idol anime you were looking for so I just threw out a bunch of different ones

Thank you for all the recs! I wasn't very specific, but this seems like a good list to go off of! The reason I don't much like Love Live is the same-faceness, which is honestly a problem with a lot of anime.

utapri has an english version of the mobile game available and has multiple seasons of anime.

Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight is an idol series that got tossed in a blender with Revolutionary Girl Utena (for the anime) or Fate Grand/Order (for the mobile game). You follow nine stage girls (actresses in training) as they compete to be the top star. They compete to be the top star by fighting in revues, musical duels where they beat the shit out of each other with weapons. It's surprisingly dark at certain points and there's not as much focus on idol tropes as some of the other shows (except for our protag Karen, who is the most idol protag to ever idol protag)

Bang Dream is fun, if fairly predictable. The anime is a big ol'mess and the girls do suffer from sameface/a lack of personality besides quirks occasionally, but what I like is that each band has a specific genre of music that they play (straightforward J-Pop, more of an alt rock sound, a sickly sweet idol sound) and that the bands cover well-known anime songs (and also like half of the Cardfight Buddyguard soundtrack b/c Bushiroad) so you can get your weeb on and play along to "Fuwa Fuwa Time," "Butter-fly," or "A Cruel Angel's Thesis." Two of the bands (Poppin Party & Roselia) also have the voice actresses play their instruments live, which is always fun to watch on youtube.

revue starlight isn't an idol series.

i mean someone who likes idol series might enjoy it, but it's not an idol series. it's not about idols, the songs are not idol style, the whole thing is a love letter to takarazuka revue. it's not an idol series.

This is splitting hairs, but considering a lot of the out of canon factors (about half the cast were in other idol canons, the marketing & promo, the best girl type of merchandising) as well as how the girls' personalities are shown, it's pretty damn close to an idol series.

takarazuka is marketed the same way and predates the japanese idol industry by decades.

you're right, it is splitting hairs. it's not an idol series.

i'd compare it more to a musical in terms of presentation

aikatsu is incredibly funny but is also an insanely long kids show. its really worth it though, imo, it uses its longform format to have the characters develop subtly over a large span of time and to build up a rotating cast of characters with their own goals and personalities. you have to be in the mood for, again, a kids show thats over 100 episodes, but i recommend it if you're willing to watch that. aikatsu stars is great, too, especially the second half of it.

idolm@ster cinderella girls has a few too many characters for all of them to get spotlight and a kind of weak start but i really like the back half of it and how it explores the characters' flaws and failures and their different expectations from becoming an idol, there's a lot of very subtle characterization. the director is extremely talented, too, so a lot of the shots are really pretty and there's a good amount of characterization/storytelling just through how shots are laid out. and it actually makes uses of its cinderella theme in a mostly subtle, visual way, which is fun. and i like that there's a male 'protagonist' but hes really just a supporting character and there's basically nothing that teases any of the girls having any kind of romantic feelings for him.

the original idolm@ster series is basically the opposite, the characterization isn't that strong outside of a few characters and it goes way harder on the 'everyone loves the male lead!' aspect, but it's got really bouncy, lively animation and some great gag episodes, so if you're willing to put up with that kind of writing it's a good time.
