So what if someone robs your house or it catches on fire or floods or something? Your entire life savings are gone?

it's not like i have life savings. i'm on disability, so most of the time i live monthly check to monthly check. i also live in an sro, so the only thing i really have to worry about is a fire. i know i'm not the only person that keeps their money on them, so i'm more surprised that people are surprised about this. maybe a bank would make sense if i had thousands of dollars to deal with, or even hundreds? but i have about two or three hundred for the month after paying all my bills, and i'd rather have that on me. which is part of the frugality problem. when you're scraping together the last of your change to use for food, it's easier if you have that change on you than if you're trying to hope you have a buck in the bank, which you can't generally use on a debit machine because of the surcharge anyway.

i think this sort of comes down to an issue of the poverty line. if i were richer, maybe i'd use a bank because i'd have a reason to. i'm not, so i'd rather have my cash at hand so i can spend it to the last bit if i have to.

Throw in that a number of countries specifically limit how much you're allowed to save if you're on disability and you'll lose it if you save more than that.

maybe i'm just a dumb american, but wouldn't the government/disability dept prefer that you keep a paper trail? a lot of people in the us might work under the table to avoid taxes, child support, losing benefits, etc. plus it's easier to do direct deposit than deal with cashing checks, storing cash, w/e.

in my experience, it's suspicious to not have a bank account in general, especially when it comes to getting low income assistance even if it's not through the government. when i was homeless and didn't have a bank account because i was constantly moving and barely had anything excluding ebt and what i could carry on me, people didn't believe me when i said i had no bank account. some people were even harsh toward me because a lot of people are soooo anti-poor people. never commit a single crime but i've had non-homeless people legit steal shit from me or harass me, so fucked.

i never said i didn't have a bank account. i have one. my disability is directly deposited into it. i just take it out monthly and spend what i have on hand. they have my rental amount and my phone bill, which i showed them the receipts for, so they have my paper trail. on top of that, i pay for my internet (way too expensive, imo), and outside of that, it's medication that isn't covered by msp (which isn't much, thankfully) and food. even without the bank account, it's not that unusual for people to just have checks mailed to them and they cash it at money mart. our welfare system/disability system is different out here in that we don't have supplemented rent like section 8 or food stamps. if you qualify for regular welfare, you have to show that you're looking for work by filling out work assignment forms/go to work programs and you get about 700 a month (that includes rent). if you're on ppmb (persons with persistent multiple barriers), you don't have to look for work, but you only get the same amount as regular welfare. if you're on disability, you get about 1100 a month and that's after you've been cleared by a doctor/advocate to prove that you're incapable of working.

a lot of people that are on assistance out here don't have bank accounts and that's not really uncommon. at least it's never been imo for west coast canadians. i don't know about the rest of canada and the other provinces. you still might get people trying to work under the table here, but i don't have a lot of personal experience with that, so i can't say what the stats are on that. you'd be surprised how many people out here don't have id/have lost it and just have a photocopy. a bank is good, but it's not necessary and they don't really care how you cash your check or what you do with it after you get it. a lot of people in my area get their check and blow it on drugs within the first few days and then have to rely on free food services for the rest of the month. we have a pretty high crime rate and opiate/fentanyl addiction rate out here. the day of and the day after welfare day are always full of ambulance sirens and it's kind of sad.

are there any services like goodrx that work in canada? not sure how prevalent those are outside of the land of the "free." i have nooo idea how canadian health care works, especially in your province.

idk what kind of advice to give for internet though. is it a monopoly in your area? do you have the option of getting an unlimited phone plan (normally $40-60 usd here) and using your phone data as a hotspot? maybe you could ask a neighbor about sharing the costs.

if there's anything you struggle with, i could try to advise! like in the rv/van thread, i replied to an rv anon with links about doing laundry without a washer/laundromat, not sure if that might be of some use. can't afford to donate pizzas but hopefully advice and directing my feels in your general direction mean something.

i don't know what goodrx is, but my meds are low enough that i'm not really concerned about that as a monthly expense. unfortunately, though, internet is mostly a monopoly in the city, with shaw being the big one and telus being a runnerup. both cost a fortune, but i also live in an older building that isn't wired for telus, so if i even wanted to try to go for that, which i tried years ago, i would have to spend 300+ just to get it wired to my room, and that's definitely not worth it. i'm looking at other options, but they're significantly limited and depend on the building. the building itself is wired for shaw and since it's an sro, they seem to have a contract with them and that leaves me with no options unless i move (and that would cost way too much money just for cheaper internet). my phone's actually not too bad, anon. i'm on a pay as you go service called chatr, and it costs me 28 bucks a month for unlimited calling within my province and 100 texts, so i'm pretty happy there.

i appreciate the good thoughts, but i never came into this thread looking for overall advice, just an rp helpful decision breaker between chicken and fish and somehow, as usual, the conversation changed because conversations do that. i'm pretty happy with things the way they are and i do the best i can within my budget, which is how i'm able to pick between two crappy food options as a splurge once a month.

you're not a dumb american, anon. things work differently for those under the poverty line in both countries. i've always found it interesting, myself. like we can't sell our blood or semen or eggs here. it's all via donation, so there's limited access on ways poor people can make money. but hey, free health care?

goodrx.com ! for all i know it's a 'murrica-only thing but poor folks shouldn't be paying out the ass when they don't have to. idk if your pharmacists might know any discounts you might qualify for. not sure how cost-effective mail pharmacies are up there? THIS MAY BE AMERICA-ONLY IDK but some medication manufacturors have financial aid type programs where you and your doctors fill out some paperworks and you could quality for the medication (brand name even?) at a low price. iirc it takes a few months to get started and you have to reapply every 6 or 12 months tho.

re: internet. are you kind of homebound or are you able to hang out at places with public wifi like the library? i used to download a ton of stuff on public wi-fi for when i was offline. like youtube videos, ebooks/pdfs of webpages to read, music, video games, if going internetless at home might be an option for you. i'm assuming your building is nowhere near any businesses with public wi-fi, right?

social welfare is amazing and a godsend to so many, but it's also broken in that it's really difficult for a lot of people to go from "on benefits" to "making enough to not struggle when the benefits are gone." people act like we're just dying to get free government money but the housing is TERRIBLE, the benefits are LIMITED, too many social workers are trying their best to BOOT YOU OFF for any little mistake (even if it's their own mistake!), shit's hard! i mean damn, i dread dealing with most social workers because there's just so much BULLSHIT involved.

nah, i'm pretty much homebound. i'm right in the heart of the city, so there's plenty of businesses around me, but i only have a desktop, so internet at home is kind of a must. that and i use it all day at home anyway, so the idea of having to be out in public and spending money at places just to sit and use internet for a limited time when i can use it at home unlimited makes no sense to me. (and again, desktop, so i'd be limited to phone access and i don't do phone stuff enough for that to be usable).

fortunately for me, all of my prescription medications are actually covered by being a broke ass motherfucker. social services/welfare medical service plan (msp) covers a shitload, but it has limited my medication so that i don't have as many non-free options as i do free ones. but i do well enough, and that's fine for me. it's over the counter stuff that costs me money, which i fortunately don't have to spend a lot on, so i really do consider myself lucky. i have american friends who i see going into debt just to afford things that i wish to god i could help them out with. insulin and epi pens shouldn't cost you your literal life. (don't even get me started on my female bodied medical rage for americans).

that's the problem up here, too. we have a limited amount of money from our monthly benefits that are allotted towards rent (375 atm) and there are literally NO places to rent that are within that price range. even in the sro i'm in, it's 425 and i'm in the cheapest option in my area. all the other dirtier, less secure, more violent/drug addict filled places are 500 and up, and i just can't afford that out of my budget. so i lucked out in getting where i am, but the problem with that is that it's limited me so that i don't have moving options. low income housing is a joke and i've already applied to get on bc housing (which is i think something like section 8 in that it helps supplement your rental income), but the wait for that when you're not in an emergency situation or w/kids can be over 10 years. i've been on for four. add in that they've forced automation on the welfare system so you aren't allowed to actually go into the office to make requests anymore and have to have online access/phone access, it's a joke. did you know there's no payphones out here anymore? haven't been for about ten years now. so there's no public access to a phone and they demand you use the internet, but they won't help you with getting access to that and it's such a shit show, people wind up just living on the streets and getting what support they can because something is better than nothing. (i could show you pics of the tent cities along the closed businesses on my street, because rent is so high for the downtown core, most of the strips here are vacant buildings)

between the housing crisis and this year being the first time in over 10 that we've had an income boost... it's hard as hell being poor. even the free food programs like food banks are a joke. here's a can of soup and a potato. make that last a week.

idk how tight your budget is but i'd recommend maybe squirreling some money away for an emergency lightweight laptop (or tablet if you prefer, i recommend a case with mini keyboard too if you hate touch-typing) if you ever think you might have to move out or risk homelessness. can't really carry a desktop around!

when i was homeless, my cheapo little netbook felt like the only thing keeping me sane tbh. DEFINITELY back your computer shit up on your cloud storage service of choice in case you get robbed. i keep all my important shit online except for a copy of my keepass files, aka password storage. if i got robbed right now, i'd have to redownload videos and shit again but nothing life-ruining. throw it in a decently sized bag, lock it shut if you're paranoid, hide it under your pillow in a shelter, wrap the strap around yourself.

with public wi-fi, don't feel obligated to sit in a restaurant and order food all day every day. sometimes you can get away with loitering outside on your phone/mobile device for a bit or pretending you're waiting to meet someone. free places like libraries are best for obvious reasons. dress like you're not homeless and hopefully people assume you're just some broke-ass student.

ugh, the american healthcare system. my god, for the longest time, poor women have basically been fucked unless they're pregnant or disabled. becoming disabled was somewhat of a blessing in that way? horrible that the "best country in the world" treats its own citizens this way while doing a bunch of bullshit flexing. i don't live in low income housing but yeah it's pretty similar in the usa. a big fucking joke. sometimes it feels like it's purposely set up so shittily to make us fail. section 8 housing here also takes a thousand years to get unless you're currently homeless and/or disabled and/or with kids. i'm not saying they don't deserve housing too, it's just fucking crazy that so many people need it in the first place, what's wrong with this country?!

oof, it must be because that area is more populous re: food banks. i've done food banks many, many times in my life in my small manitoba area and they give you a truck full of stuff each time. that really blows.

People are surprised because you didn't mention you were on disability first of all.

Second of all, the people I know on disability still use banks, aside from some elderly types who are paranoid about the bank. It is very unusual to not use a bank.
