I'm sure he's made SOME sort of commitment to his publisher.

They usually ask for things like that.

Don't just hand out wads of money like "maybe you'll give us a book, maybe you won't, but eh, whatever"

You do also realize that he's so rich that he doesn't need money from his publisher. What is likely going on is that he's only getting the money owed him for the sales of his previous works and royalties for all the licensed products.

What you don't seem to get is that money is only an incentive in someone who actually needs it or is motivated by greed. People keep saying it's his job, but the thing is that he doesn't need to have a job. And what can his publisher do at this point, fire him? That actually would screw them over more than the current situation is. It's not like there is another GRRM they could go sign a contract with. I know this seems baffling because most of us are used to being able to be replaced if we don't do our jobs. The fact is that there are fields out there where there is a higher demand for people who can do a certain job than people who can do that job. When that happens a company is more likely to put up with shitty behaviors because it's worse for them to be without that person than to put up with their BS. That's the situation GRRM's publisher is in.

At this point the only reason why he's still writing is out of pleasure, not financial need. It's plain as day that finishing this series isn't something he's enjoying any more and I wouldn't be shocked if the fans' entitled attitudes contribute to that.

are you grrm's assistant or something? feeling guilty you can't get him to stop being lazy and finish the book he said would come out 8 years ago? or are you some other writer's assistant that gets super offended on behalf of writers?

either way you're wrong. writers writing books for their livelihood is literally their job and people expect products from them. especially when they are very public about the continuation of a popular series and keep saying different dates and never making a single one. people expecting them to follow through on their job is the opposite of "entitlement" but thanks for playing.

ASOIAF isn't his only series. He works in television sometimes and he works on other books. He also edits other peoples' books. It isn't as though he doesn't do anything at all in the writing world.

And he has the money to afford to be lazy.

i really just wonder if he's not allowed to finish the books until the show is over. everyone is just assuming that it's laziness, but i really could believe that it's something behind the scenes.

at the same time if he's just rich and tired of writing asoiaf i don't even blame him. the fandom is fucking crazy.

man i wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, there was a lot of "yeah we already know what happens" back in the day of the first few seasons. but even if your theory isn't incorrect, i do think the publishers will put pressure on him after the show is over to keep the franchise rolling

I know everyone's demanding the book because the show turned into a hot mess, but I honestly think he's pretty close to at least finishing book 6, or should be with the amount of time he's had to do it in.

Book 7, on the other hand, I don't think we're ever going to get, and that'll be a real kick in the ass, to be one book short of the actual ending.
