What drew you to this sort of volunteering/working?

It's in my wheelhouse! I have a bachelor of arts in political science and sidestepping into a political support role was always part of the plan. What no one tells you—what I wish someone had told me, years ago, back when I was fresh faced and a baby student—is that political offices, MPs or senators or congress or whatever they are, aren't looking for political science graduates. Because unless you co-op, it's a degree that's largely theoretical. The practical applications and hands-on skills are only there if you squint. For example, you can list the typical liberal arts laundry list of "learned how to research" "learned how to think critically" "advanced excel skills" on your CV but I wasn't learning speech writing, for example. Maybe it's different in a school where the instructors are actually former politicians but I didn't have that experience. The biggest lesson I can pass on to anyone is that political offices want communications majors. They want people who can run their social media and make their graphics and know their way around a camera.

Boy, that was a tangent! tl;dr the point is, despite it being part of my education and my goal, I didn't do anything with it for a few years after graduating. I struggled to break through that barrier of, essentially, not being what political offices are looking for. I took an unrelated office job and focused on building my independent, post-university adult life instead. I'm still at that job and it's fine, but right now I am so personally unhappy with the way my province is being governed currently. I no longer felt like I could not do something, if that makes sense.

Even breaking into political work on a volunteer basis is difficult. A lot of the time, people do not call back or e-mail back. The party I support is gaining some small traction in my country with now three elected members of parliament and one member of provincial parliament and more candidates making a real push. The need for volunteers was rising, so I filled out the form, but there was definitely an element of luck and making a good impression on Mr. Manager. To be honest, I'm not sure at this point I'll ever work for a paycheque in the political sphere—or if I even want to, shh—but I do want to continue donating my spare time in this way. I get to meet a lot of new people and form connections, which is always fun and exciting.
