Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Congrats and good luck, whether or not you decide to go with astro! It's hard to say without knowing what your other degree is in, but besides the basics of making sure you have enough math (for an undergrad degree you can start at calculus fine, but needing the earlier classes like I did will delay your degree a little and make the courses that expect you already know calculus a lot harder) and some general science knowledge, there are two things in specific I can think of.

One is that computer programming is used a LOT in astro. Python is a big language for it, and also fortran, though it's certainly not just those two. Having skills in even one coding language will give you a big advantage as far as research projects go, and will make your life in general easier because astro usually requires computer programming courses as a part of the degree. On a similar note, you'll probably use linux a lot, so some familiarity with it and how to do command line stuff in it will serve you well.

The other is to brush up on chemistry. It's extremely helpful in astro, especially the basics and knowledge of how hydrogen and helium like to combine and what they're made up of, how emission spectra works, etc. Those things come up a lot in astro and they're usually not well-explained in class, so knowing about them beforehand helps. Chemistry in general also helps a ton in nuclear physics, if you decide to take it as an elective or to strengthen astro-specific knowledge like stellar nucleosynthesis.

I hope those are at least slightly useful answers!

That’s super helpful, thank you!

I’m coming from a liberal arts background but I’m in the process of getting a general science and math certificate from a local school. From there, fingers crossed, I can step into a STEM field!

And as to not waste your AMA time, uh
Do you know Katie Bouman personally!

You're welcome! You can do it; one of the other grad students at my school (although he's in space studies instead of astrophysics) actually had a philosophy undergrad, so it's definitely possible to make a big switch especially since it seems like you're building a good foundation! Also your liberal arts background will probably help more than you might think; astro requires a lot of writing (papers, grants, posters, presentations, etc) and public speaking skills, and the community is very international, so a lot of those more open-minded, free-thinking artsy skills are very useful.

I don't! But I'm very impressed by what I know about her; her area of focus is way different from mine, but I know from experience analyzing and cleaning up data is not easy and I'm in awe of her work!
