Hey anon, this is Saphie here, one of the original three creators. We're all still in RP off and on in varying degrees. A few people brought this to my attention and I bounced this towards the other two on plurk just to figure out how we all feel about it. They've agreed to let me speak on their behalf so we're not repeating each other and I put this response past them and they okayed it. Consensus is: we're glad people still remember some parts of the game's setup fondly, and wished we could've made sure the game was handled better so people only remembered the fond bits, but we'd really prefer not to see a direct reboot. We'd like to let wanking dogs lie and not see old crap rehashed.

On my end, I modded the game during a really tough time in my life, and I caught a lot of heat for a lot of things without anyone knowing I was facing DV at home, until a big explosion in my home life at the end of the game. Once I escaped and got my sister out, I got got into a much better place. Rebooting the game has the potential for people to drag up 7+ year old shit and rehash it, and after spending so much time trying to cool it and move on, I'd like to keep the peace I've found. The other two would, too. They had their own respective shit going on, including deaths in the family, mental health issues, etc. We also think you'd be hamstringing yourself by attaching it to a game with such an explosively wanky rep and wanted to warn about that.

That said, you absolutely have our blessing on reusing some of the big identifiable elements because we don't have ownership over those. Sentient bioships, meatsuits, dimension-hopping, evil (or not so evil?) space bugs - they're all elements pulled from stuff all over the genre. The sentient AI spacship thing I ripped off from that hokey ass sci fi show Andromeda, the bioship and meatsuits were a little HR Giger/the space jockeys from aliens, the dimension-hopping was Sliders, the space bugs were a mix of Starship Troopers/the Tyranids from Warhammer 40k/Ender's Game etc. etc. And stuff like the interactive setting that people can add to has been in dwrp off and on.

So please feel free to file the serial numbers off anything we used without feeling like you're being tacky or ripping anything off. We ripped it off, too. If things are identifiably similar or inspired by T9, like if you have a sentient bio spaceship, you don't even need permission since those things don't belong to us. We'd just like a solid enough divide in the names and continuity that it's its own thing, so the past can stay in the past.

ps if you ever want feedback on how the mods massively hecked it up so you know what to avoid, feel free to pm me. I got a lot of advice from the mod team that kinda froze out the game and I ran Legion more recently, which went fairly well. Fucking up something that massively teaches you a lot about what to do and what not to do as a mod. Like number one bit of feedback: game caps are your friend.

i'm a random flatviewer who was never in trans_9 but i hope you guys continue to heal over time. good luck in rp and rl! response not necessary if you want to keep commenting to a minimum.

your concerns are entirely understandable and i agree that it would be best not to reboot T9. as i mentioned to another anon in this thread, my main worry was churning out something really obviously derivative - to me, the line seems to be really thin between taking inspiration from something and just recreating it whole cloth and ending up with the roleplay equivalent of Transmorphers, or whatever. so the idea of a reboot seemed a little safer - a way of saying "yes, this is supposed to look like that thing from before," if that makes sense.

so, i'm working on an original idea that that i'm sure borrows from some of the concepts in T9 but will hopefully be its own thing. if it ever gets off the ground, i'd like to take you up on the offer to discuss mod stuff. i'll need all the help i can get, heh.

i also want to thank you for all the work you and the other mods put into Trans 9 and giving me and the rest of the playerbase such a great setting to mess around in. i really treasure the time i spent there.

Thanks for being understanding, anon. I can speak for all three of us when I say that I wish you and your game the best.

And I'm glad you enjoyed the game back in the day. I know I personally messed up in quite a few places, and some of the mod teams did collectively, but a lot of people assumed attitudes of me that I didn't have. At the end of the day, I just wanted people to have fun. I'm glad at least some of that came across, enough that you can look back on the game with some positivity.
