Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

they had horror, either extreme or subtle, events every month, anon. i joined the game in, like, 2009 and was there till it closed. plus the background horror stuff that went on constantly.

the most non-horror event they had was the goofy, over-the-top april fool's event with the milkman vs the postman. everything else was pretty consistently on theme.

i mean there were players who definitely did their damndest to ignore ANY non-SOL components of the game, so maybe anon is one of those and just mis-remembering, but the game was definitely not an SOL game.

wasn't there a thing about razorblades in the milk or something

that's sexy, i never played in mayfield but i'm sad nothing else has really hit that balance for me since

the milk had all kinds of recurring deadly effects. it was a background horror for the most part.

I think the reason people are having trouble remembering the horror aspect is because, toward the end, the mods just gave up on it. The metaplot started off very strong and escalated to insane levels where they had about four or five opportunities to go into endgame years before they finally did, but they just got burned out or lazy or both and let it putter off into SOL. It didn't help that a huge chunk of the playerbase was trying their hardest to ignore the horror part of the game too.

In the end Mayfield got its endgame but it was a rushed, soulless one made all the more insulting by how much effort had been put into the world building before. So many lessons can be learned on how not to run a game from it.

the endgame was flat and not very engaging or entertaining, but i still felt they kept pretty consistently on theme, even towards the end. lazily so, but still on theme.

besides, the anon arguing it was an SOL game wasn't even around for endgame.

I don’t remember very many outright horror events so you guys must have a low threshold for that, the majority of what I remember was subtle.

"either extreme or subtle"

Re: bring back mayfield

(Anonymous) 2019-05-14 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes... it was both but mostly subtle as I said

how many times are you going to change your point until you just admit you were wrong about it being an sol game.

Grass. It's outside. Touch some. "We remember a roleplaying game from almost a decade ago differently" is not argument material.

thing is, when multiple people are telling you that you remember it wrong, maybe you should just say that instead of twisting things to make yourself still sound right. it's a dumb hill to die on.

You must have a special condition because idk how else to say “our experiences were different which meant I didn’t experience the horror aspects as much as you.” Please get some social awareness and maybe take a break from the computer. It’s gonna be okay, anon.

In my time in game, I remember there was a nuclear wasteland event where the whole town was leveled and there were roving bands of mutant cannibals, two different week long living dead events, a gruesome body horror event where characters were kidnapped and surgically changed against their will, another where food either rotted away fast or it was poisoned, plus you had the ability to just "drone" your character into Stepfordian compliance. I think the mods also made YouTube videos for some of the events, as well

this is just what I recall off the top of my head. the game wasn't that subtle

You are severely misremembering Mayfield if you think the events weren't horror. If anything it was the proto-version of torture-porny jamjars that didn't have much of a metaplot or a point other than grinding down your characters with constant misery (which is also a dead game genre. Damn we're old.)

Re: bring back mayfield

(Anonymous) 2019-05-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Events like that didn’t happen every month. I didn’t stay til endgame so I have no idea if they ramped it up in the last year but yeah they must have since it wasn’t a strict horror game when I was there.

Re: bring back mayfield

(Anonymous) 2019-05-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
anon who was in there since 2009; yes, they had a horror themed event almost every month. we can literally go to the lj version of the comm and confirm (https://mayfield-rpg.livejournal.com/?skip=150&tag=event this is as far back as the mods using the event tag go, but even then, you can see, month to month, whether subtle or extreme, almost every monthly event has an element of horror to it)

like idk why you're insisting on this. you're wrong/misremembering, anon. it's okay. take the L

We remember differently or had different experiences. It's... really not that serious. The fact you've been arguing about it this long makes me think you really need to touch some grass.

Regardless I'd be happy for a similar game.

mayfield wasnt really SOL but you guys are embarrassing. ayrt probably didnt participate in the horror events as much as you. stop shitting up flatview already with this pointless argument

Re: da

RPA is so boring that anons argue all day about whether a livejournal game was SOL or not.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2019-05-15 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
but they didn't say they didn't participate. they literally said they never happened.
