I still haven't caught up with OP but I'm dying to know what you're talking about. What's up with 944 and "hints"? (I don't mind spoilers, so please dish. )

Okay so basically back before Marineford arc and Ace biting it, Oda did a color spread that had the chapter of Ace's death embedded in it and a bunch of hints that he was going to die. He did a similar color spread a little while back that included the number 944, the words "ultimo" (last) and "mejor" (best), a bunch of crosses, all on or near Zoro. People have read it as hinting that either Zoro or Mihawk is going to die in chapter 944.

I... don't really buy it. No way in hell are any of the Straw Hats going to die, imo, and even if Oda decides to kill Mihawk somehow other than Zoro doing it - which could be cool, just to subvert the trope - I think there would still be a lot more lead-in. Right now we're in the middle of a really complex arc and Mihawk is nowhere nearby, although he popped up a month or so ago in a sort of "meanwhile..." scene. So I'm not really sure WHAT'S coming and a lot of fans are nervous.

just when I think the ridiculous speculation in this fandom can't get any weirder...

I'm going to laugh a lot when tomorrow comes and goes and no one is dead. he won't even admit whether Pedro and Pound are dead, he's not killing off any Straw Hats in the middle of an arc when there is no fighting happening.

I somehow missed this speculation all this time, but that's hilarious. Like if he had the balls to kill Zoro I'd be impressed but there's no way.

Someone was talking about this on plurk and it turns out there's no basis for any of this.

The chapter of Ace's death was never mentioned in a color spread. After Marineford someone went back and said that Luffy was holding an ace of spades card and therefore it was foreshadowing. Somehow they got it in their head that the chapter number was mentioned but it wasn't. Also, that color spread was only about 50 chapters prior to the actual happening.

The color spread with the zombies was 4 years ago. Hundreds of chapters ago. Two and a half arcs ago. Oda can't even finish a single arc on time, he'd never call that an event will happen in a certain chapter four years ahead of time. If he's planning to kill anyone off in Wano, it'll still be another fifty chapters away when the fighting begins. Even then my bets are on anyone but a Straw Hat. I'd be more concerned about Law than anyone else.

Take comfort, dear anon. Nothing is going to happen. Prepare your popcorn for the fans with egg on their faces when it comes and goes as a normal chapter.

this kind of stuff makes me feel sorry for manga authors all over again. i can already imagine the over-the-top outrage/tears/whining if the theories these people have come up with all on their own don't pan out. they'll blame the author like it was his fault for not fulfilling the expectations they pulled out of nowhere. the shit the authors are forced to put up with from their "fans" is ridiculous.

also from what i know of one piece from my days as a little middle school weeb, if zoro dies? no one is gonna be happy.

fortunately, Oda rarely hears any of this, I think he still requires fan letters/correspondence to be in Japanese and doesn't use social media. smart man.

the rest of us in fandom, though, we have to put up with the whining until the next flat earther comes up with a new crackpot theory.
