no such thing as too many twinks

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

but the people talking on the network aren't the npcs. are you saying your character wouldn't even comment on plot posts to gather information? are you saying your character doesn't have a single interest or hobby they would chat about? what kinds of logs do you tag in? the themes of the logs some time match the network, the difference is in person vs screen.

i know some people don't like networks out of personal preference and that's perfectly fine, but when they blame it on the character i side eye. it sounds like you are lacking a bit of imagination there.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe their imagination is only full of real things

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
was waiting for someone to remember that

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
the paranoid characters assume that the npcs are monitoring the network

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
well with that logic you can't tag logs either because a paranoid character is going to be afraid of being watched through security cameras or magical gods with all seeing eyes

also way to skipped the part about me asking if your character literally does not have interests or hobbies. i can understand not wanting to discuss plot in the network, some of my characters reserved those conversations for face-to-face time in case of hackers too, but i seriously doubt they're going to care if someone hears them talk about the best way to cook an egg

da

it's one thing to assume jamjar gods are watching with their all powerful eyes and that gets handwaved any my paranoid character doesn't have concrete evidence of what they've said in text

for everyone else in the game to also see

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
so why can the first paranoia get handwaved and the second can't, that's so dumb

also guess what, genius, in public, in the bus, while waiting in line, while eating in a restaurant, everyone else can hear what you say too. and yet they don't have a problem tagging open logs

so unless you play basement dweller that wears a tin foil hat, there must be some topics they don't mind talking in public, be public as in person or public as in network

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
uh no it's not dumb. there can be different levels of paranoia and tiers of character concessions i'm willing to make and i'm already making a lot just to have them exist in jamjar land without freaking out and getting weird and tin foil hat-y

why does this bother you so much that a paranoid character doesn't want to use a network and i am frustrated for it but know that's not something i can easily fix

this is a common problem in a lot of games which is why networks are a crapshoot

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
let me see if i get this right, you're ignoring TONS OF SHIT but the dumb network is the 1% line you won't cross. that's stupid. if you can ignore your character being paranoid in public you can ignore it on the network, you aren't doing it just because you don't feel like it which ok do whatever you want but don't come and cry about it when you're making things harder and putting the limitations yourself

it bothers me because i hate lack of ooc =/= ic. like i said, lots of people hate tagging the network system, and that's fine, personal preferences and all that jazz, but i hate it when people want to justify personal preferences through the character.

also you hit a big petpeeve of mine which is sounding very similar to "wah wah i play an antisocial character it isn't my fault!!!". dude when you pick up these characters you know what you're getting into and you must be ready to ignore some things in order to make it work

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
your pet peeve is really coloring your ability to understand the other side of the coin at all

there are a lot of gray areas between 100% paranoid fuck shouldn't even play in a game and 0% goes with the flow doesn't even care. things can exists outside of extremes.

i play someone who is fine talking in person, makes ac totally fine through logs and stuff like that. they read the network but have no reason to comment because they're a paranoid hacker/robot/android/digital construct/murderer/neet shut in/fill in the blank and the mods have said in the world building that the npcs watch the network and there's no way for anyone with any digital prowess to "make it private" or hack it. to them, the network is not a safe space they have control over like they do back home, where off-network in jamjar reality is more of a safe space.

so there's no ic reason for them to comment to a network post. that limitation, self-imposed or not, doesn't make them unplayable in the rest of the game setting. it's not unreasonable for me to be frustrated despite that.

literally no one is going to come crying to you personally about this if this is your dismissive attitude towards it all anyway.

i get the other side of the coin, karen, i've played antisocial characters and i never had cr problems because it's a matter of choosing who to tag and how.

>there are a lot of gray areas between 100% paranoid fuck shouldn't even play in a game and 0% goes with the flow doesn't even care

of course they are. i never said you suddenly have to send your character all over the network, but nobody is going to care if you tag *only* a post or two about puppies or eggs or whatever (not plot info, which they would protect, but puppies) if it's a topic that interests the character, just like nobody cares if an antisocial character tags an open log to chat with someone in a restaurant. you can also USE your character's paranoia and apply it to the tags by making your character go directly to action on the network post (this happens super often with all types of characters) if the post says where the character is and it somewhere your character would be at too, or even make him send a short text saying "i want to talk about this, can we meet?" explaining in brackets how he's a paranoid fuck, sorry for his weirdness. it can part just a quirk of his personality that you use in your favor, which is why i said you lack imagination. everything can be worked around. EVERYTHING.

you don't need to "justify" anything like you said on your op, it's just another of the MANY things in rp we make our characters accept when apping to games to make things work. you don't have to like networks, but if you're frustrated it's because you want that cr, so grab one of the many solutions available.
