Dream Games

What games do you wish existed or hope pop up over the summer? I'm personally hankering for some deep fantasy with some sort of mission based plot.

Re: Dream Games

Above all I hope for games where the interdimensional aspect is relevant to the plot and the stakes of the game actually affect characters on a personal level. I get really tired of settings where characters just kind of show up for unclear reasons and the interdimensional aspect/motive isn't explained for a long time if at all.

A lot of the time I end up wondering "why is it important that these otherworldly characters be here as opposed to the gods/aliens/whatever just working with the people that already lived there?" The interdimensional characters being key to the plot, and for the plot to have forward progression regarding that aspect, is the kind of thing I want the most.

Worst of all is when characters are only there because of a magical/science accident that is completely tangential to the game plot. Especially because you already know that is something that can't ever be resolved or meaningfully worked on because it's not the point.

The fact that characters are grabbed from multiple worlds is often glossed over, and it bugs me a lot it doesn't come further. I think it makes the event seem irrelevant, like a one-off story, when in fact seeing other worlds and forcing a character out of his comfort zone could be a big change.

One of these days, I'm finally going to get my noir-themed AU game that I've been wishing for now for about five years.

Re: Dream Games

I know it'll never happen, but I'd love to see a game with no important npcs. it can have some overarching vague jamjar bad guy as the cause to bring people there and it can definitely have nameless people/enemies/normal citizens/etc, but I'm tired of "you all got brought to the game by the mod's superpowerful npc overlord, proceed to kiss it's butt if you wanna get ic information!" or "want to advance the plot, time to go find this npc who we're expected to care about!"

Re: Dream Games

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 and additionally if mods say there won't be any npcs they should stick to that instead of making things all about an npc in the final hour.

This, but its a post-apoc game and the only NPCs is through PCs digging through filing cabinets for something relevant or finding post it notes and shit like that.

I feel like a game based on Horizon: Zero Dawn would be great for this. All the NPCs are memories and videos left behind, and everyone is dead except the PCs.

A SoL game with an interesting and diverse setting with lots of flexibility and where the characters are there willingly.

People always shit on SoL in games (sometimes for good reason), but I'd just rather have my character deal with emotional turmoil between his friends in a fantasy setting, than fix some fantasy's world's economy or fight in some war he doesn't give a damn about.

Having characters there willingly also cuts out the usual "how do we get home???" drama and cuts out people who aren't creative enough to come up with why their character would willingly go to another world.

i had a lot of fun in starhue valley while it lasted, it was exactly like this. wish it got more traction. sol settings i always felt like i could do more with. didn't have to worry so much that i was stepping on mod toes asking 20 questions about a setting detail because i had more freedom to adlib in what i wanted.

even though they've been done already i wish new sol games were still around that were like...

- characters are dead and this is their afterlife, or maybe they're in limbo
- characters share a dream-scape
- characters share the same interdimentional internet and can go world-hopping whenever they want
- characters share some matrix/sword art online-like combination digital world of those two ideas, or wreck-it-ralph
- characters wash up on shore to a deserted island and just have to live with what they got there
- characters wake up on floating islands and you can make up whatever you want is happening on different islands

i love SoL in fiction and i like it in dwrp but it's sadly not a genre that works well here. in the old days it worked out because of the wacky effect of the month, but with those out of the picture, people don't do anything with the setting. it applies to other genres too tbf, if the mods don't give something to do, people are out. this is one of the many reasons why DRs died, you can't just make a setting with interesting stuff and tell people "have fun". which is a pity because i would love to see something like that again. empatheias was actually doing great in that aspect, but then the arethei stuff got too invasive for my taste.

i remember a super old thread in WG where someone was complaining about end of the year approaching and dealing with all the party logs, someone replied saying they wouldn't mind them in theory (they're good ways to find new cr) if people didn't make them so damn boring - we have all these characters from different backgrounds and with different personalities, these parties should be messy and a disaster in a fun way, but nobody ever picks up a fight or dances drunk on the table. how can you have thor, naruto and a bunch of ponies in the same room without anything happening? that question stuck with me since then. it's frustrating to say the least.

anyway i'm tldring my frustration. what i want to say is: you do have my +1 on "I'd just rather have my character deal with emotional turmoil between his friends in a fantasy setting, than fix some fantasy's world's economy or fight in some war he doesn't give a damn about". i like dwrp because it's character driven instead of plot driven. lots of people nowadays ask for plot and to affect the setting but internally they still write from a character driven pov and that's what causes problems. i mentioned this in that anon plurk that went around, but if john fucks up talking to the king of the neighbor country and the king sends fireballs that destroys the town including houses/business of people that weren't involved, those players would fucking riot.

I always really liked the way Forest Covered let characters come in semi-willingly -- all characters did agree to go there (and got something in return), but if necessary the main NPC was willing to lie and cheat to help secure that agreement. It was very flexible, and the more reluctant characters got to gripe about it ingame but also knew why they were there, what to do about it, and that it was partly their own fault.

a game with expansion as a mechanic over the months like transformation games. some become fatter, others become muscle monsters, some become giants, etc.

it'll never happen because it'd get wanked to death.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i'd be into this but for a meme or psl. if that was the only thing going on as a game mechanic it'd get a little boring after a while.

maybe an underwater setting so there's no size limits tho

I know DWRP is fed up with games in space, but I would like a sci fi game that allows for individual space exploration, akin to High Seas, or maybe not even needing people to be stuck together. Just letting them explore a galaxy at will, letting the player make planets as they wish, maybe making one world hub akin to the Citadel of Mass Effect for events.

I have characters and starships I'd love to see in a space game, such as the Executor or the Devastator from Star Wars, the Hyperion or the Alexander from StarCraft, etc. Particularly since there's space commanders that would actually get to shine in a game like this.

a game that emphasizes the power of bonds.

i was idly contemplating a game where characters all get some kind of bond creature (a la digimon/daemons/familiars, something along those lines) and the creature becomes stronger as the character makes deeper bonds with other characters. forging new bonds would be important, too, because the familiar would need infusions of fresh energy from different sources.

relationships would be "leveled up" during ac, when players turned in threads demonstrating that something significant had happened between their characters - maybe with just a summary stating "dean and goku bonded during a pie-eating contest" or something to that effect so that mods didn't have to read and evaluate every single thread.

the sticking point is that it would probably be very unwieldy and difficult to implement successfully. assigning levels to relationships would likely invite wank as players squabbled over why dean and goku's relationship was level 4 when dean and bucky's was only level 2, etc. trying to maintain existing cr while branching out to build new cr routes could lead to flaking and burnout as players discover they don't have the time or concentration for that much cr.

An SoL game where your characters can have kids, and that's incidental rather than the focus. The game wouldn't be focused entirely on the domestic, but would allow players to weave some of those elements together.

Also, and probably unrelated, but a dream game with nice CSS that works well and looks good. I can't code to save my life and when I try to monkey around in museboxes I wind up making garbage fires. I just want someone who makes all of these pleasing games to post their custom CSS somewhere I can break it down and learn to get good.

A game based on the book Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer where teams of characters set out to explore a paranormal area called Area X and weird stuff happens. If your character dies, you can play their doppelganger.

Another Steven Universe game (similar to the one Tora ruined) where characters become gems and can form fusions.

A game with no fixed setting where characters travel to different dimensions (including canon settings) every few months. Players can partially AU their characters to fit the settings and gain powers/weaknesses or modification relevant to the setting (suddenly you're a wizard with wizard powers or suddenly you're a robot) but their memories are still intact. Players can also choose to pick up temporary supplemental 'npc' characters from the setting without going through an app process.

Short term game based off Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai, where characters take turns experiencing their own personal puberty syndrome and the other characters have to figure out how to help them face their issues.

Bonus points if you call the game Wascally Wabbit.

a small OC-only fantasy game in the vein of a d&d campaign, tabletop elements optional. i just want to roleplay a small band of adventurers going on quests together in the dwrp style.

Re: Dream Games

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Similar to the idea by above anon, I've thought of some sort of PSL where it IS a tabletop campaign, but with canon characters, with their points used and spent in some sort of universal roleplaying system that could allow for combat and action scenes. With a GM setting out the story and letting the players take the decisions and actions their characters would make.

I just like the idea of a party of characters from wildly different genres and mediums working together, perhaps having joined by virtue of being on a similar game together, now adventuring in other worlds to save people.
