Honestly, if there's an OC I don't find interesting, I just tag someone else and let the OC do their own thing. It's not hurting anyone.

That said, in general...

THINGS I LIKE
* Flaws. I'm talking personality flaws (hot temper, foolish, etc.) not 'oh X is so clumsy and tripped into a hot man/girl's cleavage tee hee', anything that makes this character seem like a genuine person.
* A solid backstory. Doesn't have to be a novel, just a good foundation about where this character came from and what shaped their personality/beliefs.
* Good icons. It's shallow, I know. My concept of 'good' isn't set all that high, though, so model pictures don't bother me all that much.
* Tags everyone. Not just ship potentials, but other people. Get that CR.
* Sense of humor. Even if this character is beyond serious with a tragic past, I still like to see the occasional OC have a ridiculously bad day and get grumpy.

THINGS I HATE
* Shitty icons. Icons drawn by hand that are so ugly I can't stand to look at them. If it looks like a 10-year-old drew it with scribbles and big anime eyes, I don't want to tag it. Again, shallow. The only OC that had this going for them dropped, so I'm okay with the OC icons in the game right now for the record.
* The only flaw is a tragic past. Perfect characters are boring.
* Undefined powers/personality/background that can change on a whim. If they're constantly pulling powers out of their ass and defeating everything in their path easily, I'm bored, I'll drop the tag. (Applies to canon characters too, honestly, but seems common with OCs.)
* Constantly infodumping their tragic past to people they just met for pity points.

Hey Anon thanks for bringing some real and detailed things to the table.

see i'm also in the camp of knowing what is happening, but everyone else says they don't like having to go into the journals to see what an oc is about and i don't. I just don't? i dont get it in the slightest because i want you to sell me your character and sometimes you make a dud post, so let me look at what is really happening with your character

plus we are talking about a sol game so there isn't going to be a lot of action opportunities unless you want your character to be arrested.

so maybe just a small blurb, please.

also shallow so agreed on the icons, and I apologize to everyone that this offends, it's not you it's me

also agreed on the tags everyone. that's a big one for me because damn if some potential CR is a lot more fun than playing at maybe sorta kinda a ship that probably won't even happen.

also want to subvert your hate of perfect characters not by arguing with you about it, but instead suggesting to readers that maybe the perfection should be just a face they put on and at least make the character a sloppy ass mess when they get some close CR, because you are right, perfection is boring

i wanna cite a very specific example here on someone i think is a flake so i dunno if they hold to it, but they are bold enough to say they can copy powers, but don't use it in the game, too much/why have it/etc?

Fake-perfect is flawed, which I'm okay with! I'm talking about the ones who have no flaws, who are so sweet and nice and forgiving and sparkly and attractive and blaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh. Perfect male characters are always competent and right and snarky with the last word every time and powerful and clever and every girl wants to do them.

Flaws are dynamic and lead to interesting RP, which is why I'm drawn to characters that have *problems*. Egotistic, frustrated at being weak and wanting to be strong, tempted to become evil or fall for evil plans, cynical but with a sliver of optimism that my character can expand/exploit, and so on and so on.

Seriously, it's not just OCs. I don't care about perfect canon characters either, it's just easier to tag a character I'm familiar with because sometimes I'm notoriously lazy and don't want to research. Other times I'm so curious about a well played character that I drop everything to go do that research. Your mileage may vary.
