So I only just finished a series that came out about 2 years ago. I know it was super popular back then, but I dunno about now.

I kind of want to play the main character, but all the impressions I got of the fandom for the show aren't great so I'm unsure about what to do. Especially since I'm pretty sure most people would think I just want to play him for 'teh gay' or whatever.

I'm trying to get back into memes since it has been a while for me and I am looking for a bit of advice on how to jump back in again especially for ones that involve picture prompts or texting memes.

I keep finding myself getting lost whether it is searching on Tumblr for images or even on pages of tfln to find texts I can use for my characters more often than not so it is a struggle when I do want to participate and tag.

Does anyone have any tips? Any methods they use to narrow down the ones they pick or go about doing this in general?

There are a lot of TDMs around right now and I'm faced with a recurring struggle. How do you guys feel about multiples of a character on a TDM? Does it discourage you?

please don't judge a game on a tdm. please don't think one character has 'reserve rights' or something dumb just because they got to the tdm first. there could be eight of the same character on the tdm and i don't care as long as at least one of those fuckers reserves. that's the only one that matters.

on the other side, please don't use tdms as some kind of 'secret memeland' outside of bakerstreet. people with no intent to app playing on a tdm is why i don't bother tagging people in my game's tdm anymore. because i don't want to hype up for someone that's not going to actually be in my game.

do you think someone who understands the whole of a character and has seen the major influencing scenes of said character's canon can play the character w/o having seen or read the entire canon from start to finish? thoughts

depends on the canon. if you're going to play Jean Gray or the Doctor, then it'd be a losing battle to read all of X-Men or watch all of Doctor Who. and if you're going to play someone like Madoka Kaname or Dorian Pavus, then you can get by with just watching/playing the main canon and not the spin off manga, mobile game, comic books, tie-in novels, etc.

but if the canon is a few seasons/games long, self-contained, and doesn't have a shit-ton of spin-offs? then yeah, you should probably watch the whole canon.

When creating an OC, whether it's for memes or games, how much information about the character's "canon" do you like to see as either a player or mod? e.g. does the ancient history of the world the character comes from matter, or significant events that shape the world, or the culture, currency, landscape, et cetera that do not directly tie into the character themselves? Should only things that impact the character's personal history and beliefs be included, or is a more comprehensive summary better?

For OC players, do you typically create an OC from scratch and then build a world around them, or do you have a world in mind that you've been working on, and choose to play a character from it? Is it possible to play a character who has a solid personality but lacks an interesting world that has no magic or high technology (I imagine it shouldn't be different from playing against a character from a SOL canon, but most OCs I see come from fantasy worlds)? Do you have their entire life's story planned out from birth to death, as well as everything that happens to them, all their relationships, things like that?

tl;dr how much stock would you put in world history vs personal history of an OC? I want to create and play an OC, but I do not want to have to write a novel first in order to do so.

World info isn't that important to include, and I usually prefer it be separate from the character info because generally, if I'm reading an app or an info page, I really only want to know what your character is like so I know how they might interact with the setting, or with my characters. It's best if I can get straight to the meat of that without slogging through a big essay full of info that isn't required to understand that part.

So yeah, I'd only include stuff that helps the reader understand who your character is, and leave the worldbuilding at large in a separate info post, if I'd include it at all.

Where do you draw the line between an easy AC, an 'average' AC, and a hard AC?

easy is no ac to ac for below 20 comments, whether its allowed to be spread out or not.

average is ac for above 20 comments, whether its allowed to be spread out or not.

hard is there being a 'baseline ac' and a reward system where extra comments are converted to points.

how do you personally define a flake?

is it someone who drops a thread with a certain number of comments? never sees a thread to completion? disappears before anything meaningful can happen between your characters?

someone who does all of those but continuously. you have to be doing all of it for me to consider you a flake, and usually, you have to do more than once. i'm willing to give people time and the benefit of the doubt, usually. even if you still do it occasionally, if there's threads that reach their conclusion sprinkled in the middle there, i won't really care. sometimes threads get dropped.

but communication is important to me, too. i can forgive dropped threads if we're able to talk about what happened in the thread and what the conclusion would've been.

If you were planning an OC-based PSL with a friend and they weren't exactly crazy about your character's concept, would you want to know? Or would you want them to at least try playing against the character first before passing judgment?

it'd depend on the circumstances. if it was an existing OC i was specifically looking to play with, i probably wouldn't really appreciate it. if i had other options of OCs and was fine with playing any of them, i wouldn't mind knowing if the other person wasn't crazy about the first option so i could offer alternatives. and if they were OCs we were making specifically for this PSL, i'd definitely like to know if my partner wasn't crazy about the character concept or the characters' potential dynamic so i could work with them to make something we'd both have fun with.

it matters to me personally. i don't like it when a game doesn't have anything beyond basic html. even basic html can be made to look good with a little bit of effort. but i'm a graphic designer so i judge things a bit differently than most i guess.

i'm in this oc/oc psl and replies are few and far between but it's worth the wait because oh man am i loving it! their chemistry is insane which is always especially rewarding for me with ocs because you're going in blind moreso than you are with characters you're familiar with from canon or can do your research about

i am so happy for you anon! i primarily write ocs lately and have found a couple of amazing writers with ocs of their own, and it's been giving me life. i tend to be the "few and far between" replier in the worst case scenarios when life gets rude and i know it makes me really relieved when the other writer is still on board with threads. i hope your psl goes well!

do you like ocs with manga pbs or la pbs?

i like manga because you can customize them more if you can draw a little. if you can super draw then you're probably just drawing your icons from scratch which makes you the mvp

i prefer manga pbs but i think it depends on the character. if you make a character who is more like someone who would be from a LA canon, a LA pb works better, but if you're writing an oc that clearly has influences that lean more toward animated work, manga pb is the best option!
