Anon, I'm not going to sugarcoat or pat your ass over this. You won't know unless you try. It's as simple as that. Stop going "b-b-but i'll be terrible at it!!". Either do it and possibly get to join the game you want or don't and find some other game that accepts OCs.

I get this is an rp woes thread but this is one of those "woes" that can easily be fixed.

I get that, I just don't like the fact that in order to play with my friends I'm kind of stuck doing something that, put simply, I find stressful and don't enjoy.

There are other games, yeah, and in general I njoy the hobby but it still sucks to miss out.

What do you expect people to do about it? If playing canon characters stresses you out, that sucks, but no one can do anything about that.

Sorry people are having fun in another game, and sorry the "hot new game" doesn't accept OCs, but barring you taking a chance and trying a canon character (which it sounds like you don't really want to do , and that's fair enough), I don't know what else to tell you.

I don't expect anyone to do anything about it? It's just something that happens to suck and I'm venting.

When someone says "playing a canon character is too stressful" that's just code for "i like playing ocs because i can make everything up as i go and not be held to any standard" to me.

OCs can be consistent. I keep notes, apps, thread trackers, and all my other references handy to make sure I'm staying in voice and that my characters sound different from each other.

I don't like playing canons because I'm on the spectrum and have a hard time reading and interpreting them at times, especially visual media. With my own characters I know what the intent is and I don't have to stress about "getting it right", I just have to keep my characters in line with their established personality, goals, etc.

Maybe it sounds stupid but it's the way I feel and aside from missing out sometimes I do okay.

super encouraging you to consider apping from books, anon! I play almost exclusively book characters and I love seeing others around. if visual interpretation/intent is a thing, maybe try a 1st person narrator so you can be sure you have their thoughts to work from.

Thank you! I've actually also been thinking a more obscure comic character might be a good choice to try, too. Less pressure if it's not a popular fandom. I will definitely keep this in mind!

oh man, popularity pressure is SUCH a thing. I definitely prefer LCWs most of the time for just that reason.

Another advantage of books is that you usually don't have Season 7 coming and doing some totally ridiculous thing with your character that upends previous characterization. The book is just the book!

(and if you do e-readers, it's easy to search the text for specific scenes if you need a quick review/check)

That's it exactly! While it's nice to be popular, mainstream characters get so much more scrutiny and picking, plus competition and shipping pressure. In a small group of friends it could be fun maybe, but really not my thing.

It's nice to talk with someone who gets where I come from, though! If I find a character that does click with me that I feel up to trying, I will definitely keep this advice in mind!
