Probably because some of it is because it's a lot easier to get 15 quality icons of Steve Rogers than it is to get 15 quality icons of your tiefling sage OC. On top of this is the fact there's some really bad OCs out there.

There's also bad canon characters, of course, but I'd imagine it started from a bad Steve Rogers with okay icons ultimately being forgettable, whereas as a bad OC with shitty icons sears further into your brain and is more memorable.

tbf most oc players nowadays either use PBs (most of them generic modelface but some are ok) or they commission better artists for icons if they're not artists themselves for icons.

there are also plenty of canon characters with horrendous icons tho. have you seen farmboyjedi or leaderoftheresistance? those players do nothing but fandom and i stg they're allergic to making icons for even the most mainstream characters.

you're not wrong that bad ocs are more memorable, but jfc have i run into some terrible fandom characters that have ruined whole canons for me. (see: murder's weird obsession with roxanne's vagina and megamind.)

Sorry, you misunderstood me and I can't blame you for that because I worded my first post really badly. That said, it's pretty shitty you're randomly namedropping random people who might have bad icons for no particular reason, just gotta say. "B-b-but canon character players have bad icons too! Look at these people!"

What I meant was something pettier, which is back on Livejournal there were more players who were likely to take a chance on drawing their own OC's icons. More people noticed them and were harder on their writing, probably, because of the icons. And then they used that for confirmation bias: look, that OC (and you can tell because of their terrible icons!) is really bad, and have you ever seen a good OC? No? And that's really because they just didn't notice the OCs with unmemorable yet decent icons.

And from there it grew into this weird journal RP cultural stigma and bias which you notice now, even though in the year 2018 there's no reason to be biased in that way.

PBs were a thing back on LJ too, anon. There were whole icon communities just for models. The biggest change i know of for icons between LJ and DW is that a lot of OC players acknowledged they couldn't draw and had symbolic type icons instead, like pictures of books and trees and shit for a character who was associated with things like that.

I'm saying from icon wank we were born, and if part of the stigma against OCs didn't come from icon wank I'd be very surprised.
