I am of roller coaster blood! We can never be together!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Anon its a metaphor for the animation industry

The worldbuilding isnt bad, it just isnt a focus at all.

Also the magic running out is a recent thing.

>The worldbuilding isnt bad, it just isnt a focus at all.

no, see, THAT is exactly my point. the focus. i don't mind vague reasons to get a plot going some times, i read urban fantasy. so if a movie starts with "ah yeah this rock told me you are the chosen one let's get moving" is ok because then it's all about the character training and idk falling in love with princess. the rock and the past war is never brought again.

but this series keeps bringing attention to the the worldbuilding with plot points. it makes it dramatic, it plays with akko's "shonen protag" hope to fix everything. they make a whole deal of eating just potatoes because that's what they have money for and next episode i get a test on transfigurating food and its taste.

and the plot point that they bring up the most is how the world is forgetting about magic and witches are jokes for society. i could kind see this if they truly could only do magic in the school, which is a waste of time (and even then i'm stretching it because they could work there and you could go there to buy something). but chariot made SHOWS. there are MAGICAL SURGEONS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR APPEARANCE WITHOUT THE NEED TO OPERATE. their services should be super requested, they should be swimming in money.

if they didn't keep bringing this up, if they didn't want me to *care* about this and it was just girls playing with magic, it would work so much better

think of it like getting an english degree.

it's following your passion, but everyone along the way is going to relentlessly belittle it and make fun of it as a useless degree because most jobs don't care about it.

Okay so I urge you to finish watching the episodes because they address the configuring food thing (they're already using the max amount of magic they can in a day). Meanwhile, the advent and continued advancement of technology has made witches, who don't really adjust and tend to do things in a traditional way, obsolete. They're being left in the dust because of a refusal to change and adapt. Something you'd normally get a witch to do is now replaced with technology.

Chariot's shows are addressed much later in the second half and it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. In fact, despite how Akko views her, Chariot had a lot of troubles with her shows and people wanting things bigger and better with each show. Like, did you even pay attention to half the episodes mentioning witches vs tech? Like with the dragon? It's not that it's outright lack of belief, so much as people just don't see the point in witches existing anymore when they can do it themselves. Which has led to apathy in regards to them. So while the occasional witch will be exceptional, like the surgeon, most of them are going to fade into obscurity (see: Lotte's parents run a magic item cafe, but it's got all of one tiny table of magical items and the rest is a normal store).

yes i'm watching now and see what you all mean, mind you i did put up a disclaimer on my op "sorry if this is a dumb question that gets explained later".

while the explanation is there and that's great, i won't take back my rant, because that's still THIRTEEN episodes you have to get through with stuff that doesn't really add up. of course not every plot point must be done in like episode two, leaving chariot stuff for the end is great for example, but the worldbuilding could've be shown way better in the first season. or, like i said, they could've concentrated on the classes and not put attention to it, and leave those little problems for later when they wanted to expand on the problem.

For the record, it's all one season in Japan. For some reason Netflix split the cours into two seasons. I will say that going back and watching it will reveal these problems present from pretty early on (magic being limited and fading). Fafnir brings it up outright, and the entire thing with Andrew and his father is that Witches Are Outdated.

it doesn't matter if it's just one season, it's still thirteen episodes of that. it reminds me of the "it gets good in 40 hours" vidya meme. and yes, i did see the problems mentioned during the first season, that was my point, the problems mentioned didn't match the other things i was seeing and made little sense.

It's not like the eps are an hour long though. They're like twenty mins.

ok? that still doesn't change the criticism of "for the first half of your series the worldbuilding is poor so it makes it hard to care in certain supposedly dramatic scenes"

I'm gonna be honest, go back when the show is done and rewatch. There's a lot there, but it's a lot more subtle than it is in the later eps.

Heading hate to say it’s cause you missed the point. But you’re missed the point.

The first 13 or so episodes are not about direct world building. That’s done in the background. The first 13 episodes are about character building. Which has always been studio triggers strongest selling point.

And here’s the point you missed. We don’t start to get worldbuikding till akko starts to care about the witches world beyond shiny chariot. She still does really care about that part the most but it’s around there were she starts to take the non showy magic classes more seriously

* no capital letter at the beginning of the sentence.
* no punctuation, such as a period at the end.
* too short of a sentence, no examples of how ayrt's writing is awful.

D-, you can do better, anon.
