The posters came out, and they're horrible - it looks like they literally just painted over the faces in The Matrix, Blade Runner, and Labyrinth.

no, it's a cynical grab - the only thing that distinguishes RP1 from every other dystopian young adult story is a literal checklist of popular nerd-culture references

it's been a while since i read the book but a lot of the canon references/namechecks seemed to be there just so the author could beat you over the head with how nerdy!! he the protagonist is, not because they had any plot relevance. like that screencap that was floating around a few months ago that's the narrator spending half a page literally just listing a bunch of canons.

it might work better as a movie because they'll need to cut a bunch of the fluff out for copyright and pacing reasons but the book was so godawful i have no desire to see the film.

I'm surprised Cline isn't throwing a fit over his precious 80s lovestory getting more modern bits added in because what kid in 2044 would gleefully recite 'War Games' from memory?

the book sure as hell didn't. the protag's entire motivation is "i obsess therefore i own". he's not a hero out to change the world for the better, that's for sure.
