to be fair it's kind of a stupid question. unless OP has never rped anywhere else in their life, ever. nobody expects you to know about their canon up and down to make the thread "fun" for them by you knowing their canon. canon blindness is expected everywhere.

Honestly, yeah. There are jerks over where I normally play, but at leaat they aren't anon.

It's not a stupid question, by the way. Some characters come from canons that have a strong shift in tone from the next. I mean, how can I properly play out a crossover between a character from Family Guy and a humourless, angsty character from a series that holds a dark tone? That's my question; is it trial and error; you find out what works and what doesn't? Can you make anything work?

If I wasn't clear, that could have been stated, I don't mind clarifying at all!

I'm honestly really lost as to what it is about DWRP that makes people this miserable though? lol

it's really not that miserable, you're right. i feel like op is just expecting perky helpful answers and forgetting that we're not a request line or something. most of the answers have been pretty bland, honestly, and if that's considered miserable and crotchety, then maybe rpa isn't the place for them.

ime you just have your character continue to act the way they would any other time. have your medieval princess be confused by the concept of communication with someone in the next city taking any less than a full day. have your nymph wonder why the trees here won't talk to them. that's kind of the appeal of panfandom games. they'll learn eventually.

Ah okay, it makes sense when you put it like that. Maybe I just needed it spelled out for me lmao

English is not my first language, but I enjoy writing and exploring characters. I've learned a lot in my 10 years of RPing in English and have been corrected by amazing writers. It's a wonderful and fun experience, but I definitely get intimidated by games.

Especially since I can write full, descriptive paragraphs, yet have one sentence that may make someone tilt their heads lol

to answer your clarified question: for huge tonal shifts, a lot of people go for humor. other people just choose not to tag characters they don't feel they'd be able to deal with easily.

there are a lot of characters i think are cool from the background but i don't feel like our types would mesh super well. just like how you won't be friends with every person you come across, things like this are normal.

the games themselves usually wind up having a consistent-ish tone? a horror game will always have a kind of dour tone even if goofier characters app, and an adventurous, lighthearted game with goofy elements to its premise will wind up being kinda comedic even if more serious character app.

I mean, look at the canons you play from. Odds are even the most serious ones have some kind of comic relief, and the goofiest ones have some kind of straight man. And generally characters from extremely, impossibly goofy canons don't really get apped to games. When people app from comedies, it's stuff that at least occasionally pretends to have a plot and characterization, not really stuff like Family Guy or Shin-Chan or whatever.

Anon, even in a dark setting, is the world really TRULY devoid of silly or naive characters? Stop imagining them as genres. People in real life don't belong to genres. Picture them as people.

Your very serious character is allowed to just think of an overly goofy character as a weird goofball and wonder what kind of lackadaisical world he came from, but that shouldn't make it impossible for them to at least have some interactions.

Ever watched Wreck-It Ralph? That's a really fun movie to watch characters from different genres together. How about (this one's more well-known, but maybe worth revisiting!!) Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The hardboiled detective isn't made less so for all the goofy toons around him, it doesn't kill his character, he is who he is, and they are what they are!
