We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Anyone have any good sports anime recs that isn't one of the big ones like Haikyuu/Free/Yuri on ice? Nothing against those shows, I just want to try some other sports anime. Any older ones still hold up, or shows that are underrated? Looking for anything with good characters and relationships. The sport itself can be unrealistic per anime standards, so I'm not fussy about realism.

Bit oldschool but have you tried Slam Dunk? If you count fishing as a sport, Grander Musashi was pretty amusing.

Another basketball rec but try I'll - Generation Basket. Pretty atypical atmospheric sports manga, I think there were a couple of OVAs. I'm not sure if scanlations are finished, though. I also enjoyed Whistle!, which is more regular sports anime, somewhat old school and I believe does have a full anime, it's soccer.

Princess Nine is about a girl's baseball team. it's a bit dated, but i enjoyed it a lot when i watched a few years ago.

i've also heard great things about Eyeshield 21, if you haven't checked it out already.

aaaand if you're looking for truly unrealistic sports, IGPX is about giant mech racing. there's a microseries and a full-length (26 eps) tv series, both are worth checking out.

eyeshield 21 is a great sports manga, but the anime is a very poor adaptation. :(

Princess Nine is one of my favorite series

Eyeshield 21 is amazing and fun with some really heartfelt character moments! Watch Eyeshield 21 if you like silly things that can also make you occasionally cry.

karuta is not a sport.

card games are not a fucking sport.

this is a good anime, but whoever the fuck keeps bringing it up each time someone asks for sports anime recs, fucking stop it.

karuta isn't any more a sport than competitive poker or chess is. the definition of sport isn't just "competitive game". sports are inherently athletic in some way.

sit down.

thats great except the characters in the anime literally call it a sport

and it involves about as much athletic ability as, say, curling, and we call that a sport

inazuma eleven. soccer anime aimed at kids, probably the most over the top sports anime you can find. large cast and really bizarre plots but it's a lot of fun to watch. like most kids anime, there's a lot of focus on the Power of Friendship(tm)

tsuritama. fishing anime. really cute, there's a big focus on character and relationship building. animation/art is really nice too

+1

came here specifically to suggest these two and turns out another anon already said them!

ballroom e yokoso, but the anime isn't out yet, it's manga only right now.

Yawara! is an older manga (idk if it ever got adapted into anime) but it's super good. it's about judo.

All Outs is another one if you can get past the weirdly drawn faces. And while the animation quality suffers in places, i also recommend Giant Killing (it also has the best opening theme of any sports anime, fight me)

Sesuji wo Pin!

The other dancesport manga, since Ballroom e Yokoso was mentioned already.

It's got some really likeable characters and exciting dance scenes, despite or rather because of the fact that the protagonists aren't very good (and stay that way!) and are doing this just to have fun and maybe get a little more confident. It also captures that feeling of a niche thing where all participants know each other and are friends and/or rivals really well.

One of the characters looks a bit of a stereotypical borderline caricature but that's just the appearance, once you get to know him he is complex and actually really cool.

Baby Steps. It's a tennis anime, but is actual very down to earth in comparison to most of the sports anime out there (the main character isn't a prodigy overnight). It also has very nice, likable characters, and the relationship with his love interest is pretty refreshing.

Hikaru no Go probably counts and it's more character driven.
