We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

have you ever heard someone speaking out loud change their tone of voice when saying a key phrase, in order to cast a disdainful tone on it?

that's what it means. it's similar to air quotes and denotes a level of sarcasm, or laying ironic importance on whatever you're talking about.

i can't believe this is something that needed to be explained

i can.

people have a habit of pretending not to understand basic shit when it comes to tumblr, just so they can be all "hohohohooo, those silly tumblrinas!"

You will read this sentence differently from the sentence below.

You will read This Sentenceā„¢ differently from the sentence below.

You WILL read this sentence differently from the sentence below.

YOU WILL READ THIS SENTENCE D I F F E R E N T L Y FROM THE SENTENCE BELOW.

It's all just different ways of trying to convey a specific tone through typing that would otherwise not exist online! It might seem like silly tumblr-speak to you, but in terms of linguistics, it's actually pretty fascinating how things like this gradually become universal.

linguistically, I get this, but the problem I run into is when people capitalize words that are not, should not, and could possibly not be the target of emphasis. To use your example, they'd capitalize Below, or even Sentence. Like. What would you even need to emphasize, there?

idk if this is the same thing as what you've seen, but i sometimes use capitalization in a way that's not quite emphasis, but more like...distinguishing? like uh

so, obvs in english we leave regular nouns alone but we capitalize proper nouns. capitalizing a noun or noun phrase gives it a slightly different connotation - a school is a school, but School implies something formal about the school, either that it's a specific school the reader is familiar with or that it is not just a school, but the institution of school or something like that.

i think it's part of the family of jokes/ironic internet dialect that's all about clowning on formality. it's fake-pretentious, but the pretention is supposed to be funny. you talk about mundane things like some kind of eighteenth century naturalist for shits and giggles. alternately, it loops back around to genuine and you're capitalizing to evoke that proper-noun feeling instead of stopping to specify schools in general vs the common institution of schooling or whatever.

in your example, i guess capitalizing Sentence could be, like...the joke i'd read from that is that is that there are sentences, and there are Sentences, and that one was a Sentence somehow. either it's genuinely a focal point in the post, or it's an irony thing where the post is dumb and the sentence is dumb and you're acting like it was serious and important and that's the joke.

actually having reread ayrt the joke would definitely be that they're writing like their post is some kind of legal document where things are serious and meaningful and Sentences are Defined And Proper Things, and the exaggerated seriousness of the post is an ironic self-clowning thing indicating that you shouldn't take it seriously.
