We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

So way back when in 2011 when this animated short () came out, (CONTENT WARNING FOR VIOLENCE AND GORE), I had vague ideas of making a game based on the premise. It never went anywhere because I have 0 modding experience, and it was a pretty tricky concept to try and translate into RP. I stumbled on the video again recently and all the new/old ideas started flowing again and I figured I could at least toss some thoughts up on here. I've got two lines of thought here, and would be interested in anything else y'all can come up with.

SCENARIO ONE: Au game. Characters are all residents of Backwater/some other area from a similarly Old Western-y place (possibly post-apocalyptic? there's room for world building here). The events of the short have not yet happened, the priest and a handful of other people would be npc'd. For this version, I was thinking it would NOT be perma-death. Rather dead characters would come back again, but significantly different each time they died. There'd be different sorts of traits you could gain/lose upon death and the more times you died the more Ghostly and Hollow your character would get. Possibly the plot could revolve around finding some way to reverse these effects. Characters who died would also be sort of conscripted into furthering the Undertaker's agenda somehow, but I hadn't actually nailed down....what that would be.

SCENARIO TWO: More typical horror type jamjar. Displeased that this entire town failed the test so badly, Mysterious Forces decide to reboot and try again. Characters wake up having been suddenly displaced into a creepy half wrecked Backwater, and likely heavily de-powered (possible exceptions being anybody with angelic/demonic kinds of powers). Again, some npcs would be scattered about and die one at a time to set the pattern of Undertaker = inevitable death, and when player characters started to die it would actually be final. The problem with this one is that I have no idea how to make that into a real plot of any sort, much less something that could be sustainable or even unfold over a decent length of RP time.

So what elements sound cool? Is there any way to make this thing work? I'd love any kind of feedback.

OOF im an idiot, here's the video

Quick question/comments, anon! I like this concept, especially the first one, but the Undertaker does have a concrete agenda. In the Making Of Video, we see the documents with the actual story and motivations of the short, which basically straight up say the Undertaker is actually an angel from god (most likely the Angel of Death) sent to Backwater to test the people there, who God (the new testament god, the one who DOESN'T want people to fear him and has in fact been getting fed up with how they're acting towards him and the Tramp, who had an accident and lives in that car of his without any help from the townsfolk) said that if they could last seven days without turning into a bloody mess, the Undertaker would have left without anyone dying.

With that in mind, what if the game is an 'AU' where god says 'okay fine, that went poorly, I'll have you do it again but with extra people this time.' Characters are brought in via the Undertaker's coffins, and have to somehow make it so the town doesn't erupt into a bloody mess by the seventh day after the Undertaker arrives. If shit hits the fan, everything resets except for the Characters' memories, meaning they know what happened but the npc townsfolk don't. They'd have to figure out some way for people to not die (either by reducing the Minister's power over the people or convincing the townfolk not to kill The Tramp, etc.), and would have greater opportunity to learn what's really going on (possibly by speaking to the undertaker, the loops slowly giving them angelic powers due to being sent by god to save Backwater at the price of their humanity since actual angels in the bible are terrifying to look at, idk) and decide if they want to go along with this or join the Undertaker in going 'fuck it, let them kill each other.'

A concept like that would probably be a short-term, small playerbase game, but it could be really compelling if done right.

Something like this sounds seriously fun.

Woah! Yeah, I love that. And yeah, I'd seen the Making Of, but given that it's left open to interpretation in the short itself, I figured a more ambiguous take on it might just open the door for more wiggle room.

That said, I love groundhog day sorts of stuff. Again, since I have 0 modding experience, if this is left up to me it's not going to get off the ground. So if you or any other anons feel like running with this idea PLEASE go for it.
