We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

You could always have it be that people can't play a Companion unless they have a char in game, whether it's a herald or other char. That way you don't have people playing a bunch of 'special' characters.

Forgot to add that it'd also make it so that someone could app in a Herald if they'd worked out someone else playing their Companion. Clearly it'd be a work in progress and there'd have to be penalties or perma death for drops.

tbh, you'd probably have to have a war going on right away because idk how you'd justify that many penalties or deaths in the first two months.

Honestly, probably the biggest factor pushing me toward pre-Mage Storms would be the simplicity of having Karse as the everpresent simmering war.

no reason you can't have karse. they're always riding valdemar, and it's a game, so you can pretty much do as you please. i think the whole 'timeline' thing really depends on if you're going to have any book characters make appearances. or if you're allowing canon chars to be appable from a certain standpoint. if not, then i'd say you can do as you please. or you can have it during the mage storms and deal with the eastern kingdom on your own.

(not to mention there's still plenty you could come up with involving rogue mages, which was kind of the fun part during the mage wars. widen your net a bit. having karse be the omnipresent 'foe' could stick you in place, and heralds/bards/guards/artificers should be able to range all over the place.)

there's also the factor of which races will be appable. the world has such a variety of folk, you'd have to either allow all or limit which races and types you can have. hawk brothers and horse breeders and karsites and iftel and rethwellan and hardor and haighlei empire... do they have to play humans? kyree, gryphons, firecats, hertasi, etc.

and i'd seriously advise having a cap on adepts and boldfacing and emphasizing the need for people to not opt for super overpowered versions of chars. if they're a mage, pick a specialty. if they've got herald gifts, make them weak in all of them or strong in one. they can't all be vanyel/elspeth. initiate a permissions post that outlines all the abilities, what someone would know about them via 'gossip' (or even have a gossip/knowledge page in game), and telepathic/mindspeech permissions or how easily they could be read. i love this series, but as a game, it can easily be over run by op types.

i'd say stick to the humans.

if they go pre-mage storms, there's only two gryphons anywhere near valdemar, only a handful of kyree and even then only one of them would come anywhere near humans, only one firecat and he won't leave solaris' side, and the type of hertasi that live near valdemar don't speak to humans and do their best not to be seen by them if they can help it. it would be more than a bit difficult to explain them just hanging around the collegium, let alone attending or having attended in the past.

explaining the presence of tayledras, shin'a'in and even haighlei would be difficult enough, but trying to explain a kyree that isn't rris or warrl just wandering around the collegium would be too much of a pain in the ass, i would think.

and that's why i personally would prefer to go with post-mage storms. it opens up such a wider possibility and lets the mods make up where they want to go that hasn't been covered by the books. if you go pre-storms, you're locked into the timeline wherever you choose to start. it can be both exciting for book readers to know what's coming or boring, depending on preference. if it's based on valdemar, there's no reason to replay what's already been done by the 'main characters'. that's my main reason for wanting a more up to date timeline/post mage storms setting, the diversity/range of side characters/npcs being a lovely secondary. plus having a specialized mage class that might work their way up/gain mod approval to have a herald mage (for example) be taught adept magic by the tayledras could make for interesting divergences, along with just fun with magic in general.

i think the mod would have to come up with a good rule set over what abilities can be had/what the limits are/if they can be worked around or boosted with mod approval if a good reason is given. there's so much potential there and i'd love to see this worked up.

see, for me, that's why i'd like to go pre-mage storms, because it will reduce the chance of someone creating their sparklewolf or "look, i'm a reincarnation of vanyel!"

having some restriction helps to keep the special snowflake characters under control.

Sounds like the game concept already includes a point buy system for Talents, though, which should handle that perfectly well on its own?

Lackey actually set down some suggested guidelines about running a game which are probably super dated at this point, but I'd still see if you could track them down and see if there's anything about how she'd set them up that's useful to this if you go for it.

please tell me you haven't dropped this idea.
