'nother flatlander here. literally all I've ever known about this series is that futa chick who I guess I always figured was played for shock value/fetish fuel, am I to understand this series is actually like, good?

I'm obviously pretty biased here but imo the series is very good. The gameplay is a lot of fun, the soundtrack is beautiful, the story is solid, and the characters tend to be well-rounded and likable. The games feel very sincere, in my opinion, like the production team was making them because they really wanted to rather than because Squeenix executives were cracking the whip.

That said, it's definitely got some weirder moments and blatant fanservice. Kaine (futa girl from the first game) is running around in high heels and a negligee and 2A (major character in the second game) is wearing garters and booty shorts. On the other hand, I never found it too jarring because even the most naked of characters have actual depth and a purpose to the story beyond being the character not wearing real clothes. Plus the second game has it's share of female gaze fanservice.

As for Kaine, she is confirmed intersex by word of god (and it's explicitly spelled out in one of the novellas) but you can miss it in the game if you're not paying attention or just read the text differently. The fetish fuel part of her character is definitely of the more traditional 'girl not wearing any clothes' angle. On a tangentially related note, there's also a major character in the first game and a significant supporting character in the second game (as well as assorted backround characters in both games) that are confirmed gay, none of which are presented in a fanservicey way.

So yeah, the games' definitely have their share of flaws, but they're also well worth taking a look at if you like action RPGs and post-apocalyptic adventures.

driveby anon here, and yeah, what the above anon said pretty much nails it. amazing story, one of the best soundtracks ever made (i've even seen people who've never played the game say this), really fun characters, and the gameplay is okay at its worst and absolutely incredible at its best. it combines hack and slash style combat with 3d bullet hell elements (among other things) and it's probably one of the most charming, unique games i've ever had the pleasure of playing. i'd even go as far as saying the final boss of the second game is literally my favorite boss in any videogame, ever. ditto for the ending. it's just really good stuff!

seeing some of the characters out of context might make them look bad (visually, i mean) but there's way more than what meets the eye when it comes to yoko taro's games in general. something else to note about kaine— the intersex character— is that she wasn't made that way because some dude has a futa fetish. a woman helped yoko taro write nier, and kaine being intersex was her idea. there are also a lot of lgbt characters who, like the above anon said, are treated with loads of respect. there's none of that "girls can't love girls" stuff, no okama type characters, etc. yoko taro's stance on writing characters who aren't vanilla and straight is that he does it because "people like that exist", rather than it stemming from his sense of humor, a fetish, or anything else, which also helps.

basically, if you're vaguely interested but worried about the games being skeevy because of fanart you've seen or offhand things people have mentioned, they're actually pretty amazing.

The first Nier is good, but it has its downsides. It has an overall better cast and I was drawn more into its story, but Cavia, the company that produced it, wasn't super great and the gameplay is repetitive and mediocre. The game's look isn't so bad even today if you're into the overexposed aesthetic from Shadow of the Colossus or ICO, but some players find it distracting. Music is stellar all the way through, and the game's intersex woman and various gay characters are treated with subtlety and respect. The only real fetishizing that goes on is what the previous anon said - the game finds several reasons to knock Kaine out and then films some of the least subtle booty shots known to video game history. It does this several times, so I hope you like looking at asscrack. Oh, and you can drift on a giant boar.

Oh, and the game was the last thing Cavia produced, so you can actually feel the budget cuts in some places. A huge amount of the background material, including a lot of characterization for the main characters and the only explicit mentions of Kaine being intersex, can only in supplemental material like director interviews or Grimoire Nier.

The sequel has less compelling characters (especially its antagonists, just imo) and the plot didn't grab me as hard, but there's still plenty there to love. Lots of nods to Drakengard and the first Nier, improved graphics that still stay true to the look of the original, and the gameplay is infinitely better. Platinum gave this title a lot of love and a lot of people mention that the combat feels a lot like Bayonetta 2. It has a much bigger and more varied environment, fairly early access to fast travel, another fantastic soundtrack, better sidequests, and you can drift on boars and moose.

Sorry to gush. Like the other anon, I have a lot of love for these games and I'm glad more people are showing interest. I'd recommend trying a Let's Play for the first one, since there are tons of them out there and the game's not easy to find. The second game is on PS4 and PC and probably other places, so maybe give it a try? You can play Automata without knowing Nier.

the fact that she's a hermaphrodite isn't even explicitly stated in the game, and yoko taro's reasoning is just 'there are people like that in real life.'

Nier is amazing. There's some gameplay bumps in the original game and some mild writing contrivances but it has such a unique voice plot-wise that it's incredibly fascinating, and it has an incredible cast of characters. and Automata, while I think the characters are a bit less engaging, makes up for it with actually having really good gameplay.

It does so many unique things with the medium, too - it's one of the only game series out there that actually engages with games as a medium instead of just trying them like films with minigames.

Me too! He's such a weird guy and he's been trying so hard. I hated Drakengard and only kind of liked Nier but I love Automata to pieces. Good for him. I hope this means he has the clout to make the games he's had in his head all this time.
