Poll: Why Do You Mod?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-29 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
As often as people claim that modding is a thankless job, there are still plenty of games, and plenty of mods and co-mods. So if you're a mod, or have modded:

1. What motivates you to create and run a game?
2. What keeps you inspired?
3. If you're not a mod now, would you do it again? If yes, under what circumstances? If no, why not?

1. I only modded because the options were to step up or watch the game I loved close just as it was really getting good. I guess I wasn't so bad at it since I never caught wank.

2. There are some solid games out there with good players, and a handful of fundamentally unhappy bitches with agendas shouldn't be enough to destroy it all I guess. I like to have fun here, and I love to see players freaking out on plurk in a good way when the plots drop.

3. Sure, if a game I was super invested in needed a new modteam or a friend asked me to help.

1 was me. I looked around at the game I was in and didn't see a whole lot of good mod material. It was either I step up or start shopping. I think I did a good job at it too.

1. There were no games with the type of premise I wanted to play in. Making my own fun, basically, and sharing it with the class.
2. Having fun with the small things in modding kept me going. Sharing jokes with players, having fun with everyone and watching them enjoy what I created, it was great.
3. Not for a while, but I'll probably get impatient enough with all the games not hitting my wants to make my own again down the road. A while down the road, though. And I would be a lot more careful about choosing co-mods, which was the main issue last time. That, and life hit me unexpectedly so I had time to mod but no time to play, which sucked.

1. Honestly, usually because I want to play in a specific type of game and it either doesn't exist or does exist, but there are things about it (either the players or the characters in or bits and pieces about the setting, the AC, the rules; whatever) that I would prefer done differently.
2. The player responses to things like new games opening, plots rolling out, etc. Player activity and enthusiasm in general, I guess?
3. No, lmao you could literally not pay me enough to go down that road again. As opposed to writing a novel of reasons, I'll tl;dr it: players are entitled infants and I just honestly do not have enough patience to endure that again without cracking in professionalism. Like, I know that in and of itself is a whole separate debate, but I do think that mods should have some level of professionalism and I just...don't have enough patience left in me to do it.

1. If I can think of a world or setting that I'd like to play in and doesn't exist, I would want to mod a game. I'm a bit sad that modding got so thankless in the last few years because there are still games I'd like to run, but I know being a mod is miserable now. No thank you.

2. Player response to plots and engagement!

3. No. The only circumstances I would would be if anoncomms stopped being the go-to place for players to air their concerns. I 100% believe players should have a place to vent but the way anoncomms became the first place people would go to complain, while leaving mod contact posts and HMDs empty, really ended up making modding a chore for me. I'm not good enough at just not looking and end up feeling heckled by mysterious players who pretend to be friendly and then talk about what an idiot the mods and other players are over minor concerns that could be fixed or talked through if they brought them up in the right avenues.

1. I've never done so, but... it'd probably because I have an idea and I'd want to share it and have people play and have fun with it, I guess?

2. Honestly, how much fun people're going to have. That (and my players being comfortable in the game) is my top priority when it comes to modding.

3. Absolutely, but probably alongside people I know won't shirk duties or that could help me out when things are rougher on me and I can't get to everything I need to do.

1. The game I wanted to create filled a niche I hadn't seen before and wanted to play in, and I also just enjoy the creativity behind it. I've GMed a lot of tabletop and enjoy making things that other people enjoy. Making things that cause other people to have fun and be happy is fun for me.

2. My players' enthusiasm keeps me inspired. I like when they're happy. I've lucked out in having a really nice, entertaining group that takes what I give them and makes it into something better than what I could've thought of alone. When they're upset for any reason, they usually handle how they give complaints pretty politely. And while there's been the occasional genuinely wanky problem player, having most of the players be decent helps balance it out.

I also like the rare times I can genuinely surprise people with something. If you do something out of left field that they think is a well-planned and well-written surprise, they get really excited, and it's infectious.

3. I probably won't mod again after this, though, or will only do it again after a break. You can have the nicest playerbase in the world and modding still takes a lot of work. It's a lot of writing and organizing and cat-herding. But it's not really any different from times I've GMed. I usually had to take a brake from GMing after an finishing an intense campaign, and needed to be a player for a while. Sometimes you want to be the one who's surprised and that's impossible when you're the one controlling the plot.

1. What motivates you to create and run a game? I haven't created my own game so far, but I honestly prefer being behind-the-scenes. I don't play in the game I mod, which gives me the flexibility and time to actually focus my attention.

2. What keeps you inspired? It's mind-boggling how players are 100% of my best accomplishments and also 100% of my greatest frustrations. When players enjoy themselves, I feel proud and happy for them! I love seeing my creations having an effect. However when players are being heinous babes of the tit and ragepuking inexplicably on WG (while my mod contact and HMDs are barren, ofc) I want to scream.

3. If you're not a mod now, would you do it again? Between this time and the last time I modded there was a break of a few years, so I'd probably need a break again. My players are generally pretty chill though, and I think DW is moving towards more intimate capped games in general, which is a boon for mods. I like modding, so I'd probably try my hand at creating my own when this one closes.

1. I've joined two mod teams but haven't actually created any games. I modded Game A because. I honestly didn't expect to mod Game A and only tossed my name into the ring just in a 'well here I am if you don't get any applicants' scenario (protip: unless you really REALLY love the game, don't do that). I modded Game B because it was a slower game with around 15ish people and the mods brought me on as one of the other mods was starting to leave.

2. Game B honestly kept me inspired more than Game A because the setting was super flexible so people could just run hog wild with it (Game A was like four years ago and it was a horror game so yeah, you can only go so far with that). Aside from that, I actually like running player plots so part of what kept me going was just writing up fun plot ideas, stretching my creativity, and seeing how the game reacted to things like that.

3. Yes, but only for smaller games and only for certain premises. I definitely wouldn't mod a larger game or a horror game thanks to my experience with Game A and you couldn't pay me all the money in the world to mod a murdergame. I'm not too worried about anoncomms because imo the anon culture has MASSIVELY chilled out compared to where it was three or so years ago and plenty of smaller games w/out wanky histories can generally slip under the table.

1. Honestly, I first started planning my game because I was upset about my grandmother being in the hospital and I needed something to distract myself. But I kept up with the creation because I got seriously interested responses and hell, I love providing people with a place to have fun.

2. My players do, honestly. So many of them are so invested in the game and offer so many suggestions and contributions that I'm able to keep going and building on the world. I'm seriously blessed in regards to my players.

3. I'm a mod now! But I would definitely consider modding again. It's honestly a really rewarding experience (sans a few weirdos). For as long as I can keep looking at the bigger picture and seeing that more people enjoy what I'm doing than don't, it's something to look forward to and enjoy doing.

1. usually it's just that i haven't seen the idea i want to do for awhile, so i figure what the hell? my games did pretty well and people enjoyed them so i'm happy.

2. honestly it's the playerbase. having an enthusiastic playerbase, no matter how big or small, makes me want to do my best. i usually spend some time everyday looking up ideas for new events, plots, etc. seeing people plotting, excited for new content, all that shit is such a good reward. i read them happy and feel good about myself.

3. i stopped modding because my energy ran out. i'm the kind of mod that refuses to half-ass it. i want to give my players the very best experience i can and if i can't, i step down. after my first experience, i said i wouldn't do it again, but i wound up doing it again anyway. so i can't rule out modding again! sure, there are always a few rotten eggs that make the experience a pain but most players are pretty reasonable and kind if you treat them with respect. overall i enjoyed my experiences modding either way.

1. Not being able to find a game that suits what I would like to rp myself, and when I get ideas that I think would be fun for other people to play with. I get game ideas pretty often and enjoy the process of creating a premise and worldbuilding.

2. Player enthusiasm. I want people in my games to have as much fun in the sandbox i've made as i do. Active, engaged players are what keeps me going the most.

3. Not modding now, and don't know if I ever will again. The last time I tried to run a game it completely flopped and it was extremely demoralizing after I'd poured a couple of months worth of effort into putting it all together. An asshole anon crawled out of the woodwork to throw a grudgewank fit over on a harmless reserve that didn't even app, and there was lots of "I love everything about this BUT I'll wait and see before apping" so it was ultimately DOA. I'm still not sure if it was completely the wank that sank it or if my ideas just aren't very interesting to other dwrpers despite the lip service, but I'm really reluctant to invest in putting something new together because I'm afraid it will just fail again.

1. I haven't created a game on DW, but I have modded here, and it was mostly because it was either step up or watch a game I was having a lot of fun with close.

On the platforms I have created games on, it's been because I wanted to tell a collaborative story with people.

2. A solid core of good players. A few good players make up for a lot of whining and flaking.

3. Not on Dreamwidth. The environment was already pretty toxic to mods when I was modding, but it's become even worse now.

1. It's fulfilling for me to create something I'm proud of and others enjoy. I like designing, planning, and running games.

2. Positive reinforcement from the playerbase. Seeing players enthused and entertained and pleased is infectious and makes me want to work harder to give them a good time. A few words of appreciation and acknowledgement for how hard I work also goes a long way. So does genuine constructive criticism delivered to my inbox.

3. I would because I like modding but it'd have to be a smaller game with a player and character cap from the start. I'd put a lot of thought into prep, clearly outline the rules and enforce them consistently and fairly. As a site, I like DW but I'm not sure I'd be a compatible mod with the culture here. A portion of the community comes across as uptight, perfectionistic, overly negative, petty, or entitled and as a mod, I find players like that to have a toxic effect on creative communities and generally unpleasant to work with. While I don't believe all DWRPers are like that, the presence and acceptance of anon comms make it difficult to gauge exactly how widespread these traits are and how likely it'd be that I wind up with a bushel of bad apples. I'm still weighing the pros and cons of opening up shop here, though, and what adjustments and compromises might need to be made.
