We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

MANDATORY HMD

another poll about game mechanics

for games with mandatory hmd, do you think it's better to lock them or leave them public? is wank more likely to happen if they're public or does it not make a difference?

my inner wanker wants them all to be unlocked but it makes sense to lock them. crit doesn't have to be a public event.

leaving them unlocked just invites unnecessary drama.

I like reading them for less than wholesome reasons but for all intents and purposes if it's open to the game it's open to everyone that matters.

Public.

While there are valid reasons to keep HMDs game-locked - yes, crit isn't a spectator event nor is it supposed to be a public callout.

...But I find that mandatory public HMDs also keep out the largest amount of tittybabies, so that's what I prefer. The type of person who would avoid a game because they don't want to post to a publicly viewable HMD isn't likely the type of person I want to play with anyways. I was at a game that had public HMDs but offered an 'out' (basically you had to post there but could request crit be posted only to your personal journal HMD instead of the HMD post) and looking at the players who took that 'out' was like looking at a who's who list of problem players.

i've been in a game where there was no gamewide player hmd, but they required a personal hmd and the people who complained about that are just who you would expect

it's like they're semi-aware how bad they are and are afraid to get called out on it

HMDs, public or locked, barely get used to begin with, but they still make for excellent tittybaby repellents.

locked to the ooc comm

if it's a mandatory hmd for the game, then there's no reason for it to be unlocked. players in game can offer critique. any spectators can either sock up and send a private message or move along. people are so thirsty for wank that they're more likely to dogpile into an unlocked hmd at the first whiff of conflict to escalate it and that doesn't create a space where people can actually crit each other.

lock them. the hmd is there for the players in your game to air their grievances. there is absolutely no value in leaving it open so random anons can gawk or lob their two cents in because god forbid they not have a clear avenue to bother people they don't even play with.

Leave them open so people can use socks, but don't allow anon comments.

They should always be locked to protect your playerbase and make it easier to do damage control if you need to. Posting locked site content is a violation of DW's ToS. It cuts down on the amount of shitstirring people can do because anything that gets posted is subject to deletion.

As a player, I don't like unlocked mandatory HMDs because when I agree to app, it's with the understanding and expectation that the crit I'll receive will be from people who are presently in the game. If they're left unlocked, anon needs to be disabled to deter interference from uninvolved parties. If someone comes in with a sock and stirs up shit, mods can be dealt with more effectively.

As for people wanting to give anon crit, most people enable it on their personal HMDs anyway so there's that option if they absolutely need to pursue it. There are very reasons, if any, that requires them to be public.
