We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

yes, that exactly! it does look showoffy, and really dilutes the effectiveness of your writing because description is supposed to draw attention but when you get a lot of over the top froof and weird turns of phrase, EVERYTHING and nothing draws attention

I don't have the game yet, but I've played the Zelda games starting with a link to the past. Three heart runs are my jam. This comment thread has got me worried, and I've heard that combat wise it's different from the previous Zelda games. How hard is this one in comparison to the rest?

No. There's been as few as one iirc, but never zero. I was really hoping that Soul Eater character that said they were apping would get hers in. :(

What is your solution then? You seem to be putting blame on others with "people don't know how to respond to nonhuman characters other than..."

Basically you're asking other players' characters to be OOC if they can't be surprised when come across a creature that doesn't exist in their world.

Re: WHAT DO YOU WISH WOULD CHANGE WITH DW/DWRP/PLURK/ETC?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-06 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
more people actually doing things and less people sitting around talking about things they could do but won't because they want someone else to do it for them so nothing will change

or people shutting up and accepting the status quo ig

(Anonymous) 2017-04-06 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's still some time left! They seemed really excited about joining so we can keep our fingers crossed! I'm really looking forward to seeing the Soul Eater cast grow, too.

Free!

I know the fandom has quietened down a bit and stuff but...

I'm looking for a Rin, Makoto or Momotarou to play out ship or smut stuff with my Sousuke.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-06 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
can someone explain how murdergames work? like i get that they kind of follow an epic mafia/cry wolf structure but

i've looked over a few from the past and it seems like anyone could be a murderer, but how do you do that without feeling like you're twisting the personality of a character who just... really wouldn't murder someone? i think that's where my brain gets stuck

(Anonymous) 2017-04-06 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
they learn to hate, like how winnie the pooh did

(Anonymous) 2017-04-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
generally murder games provide individualized incentive every time there's a murder. a lot of the time in the app you need to list something that would motivate a character to kill, like a loved one being held hostage or their home being threatened to be destroyed or whatever. in general you shouldn't app characters who would literally never kill to a murder game, but as long as there aren't a TON of characters like that they can always be victims instead of killers.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-06 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This list doesn't take some opt-outs into account, though. Near opted out of vampire, for example.

you can and will die a lot. accept this.

that said, as long as you realize you're making this a challenge run on purpose and avoid acting like that fucknut (and probable troll) from last post who purposely refused to do anything to compensate for the self-imposed three heart limit, you'll be okay.

He is beyond complicated. But that's the making of a good character?

Both good canon points! Post-RoK he seems more like he's settled in and comfortable with where he is. I say "internally" comfortable though since it's Fushimi, and he doesn't like to give away the fact that he could be comfortable somewhere. I like the idea that Scepter 4 has given him stability, something secure to fall back on since basically his whole life pre-Homra and arguably during was having all things precious to him shattered. Unfortunately what Homra couldn't exactly provide, he gradually found in Scepter 4.

With playing him maybe post-MK (not sure if this'll help at all since anon here is also used to much more social/amiable/outgoing/actually genuinely happy characters), I can see him being more reticent around people in general. To me, what Fushimi is good at is observation though behind a shield: He's perceptive, but he hides himself at the same time to keep from getting hurt or appearing vulnerable. It's like he can scrutinize others but no one can do it to him (save for Munakata, but that's Munakata). So maybe some internal brackets/prose description of what's going on in his head might help. Try to use less words to get something across? Obviously anon isn't doing that here at all, but he would? Everything he says has meaning, even if it's self-sabotaging, but there's always something behind his words. He won't really go into idle chatter or small talk if he can help it. And tongue clicks, don't forget the tongue clicks! Sometimes that might suffice instead of words.

His posture also gives away how he's feeling since he slouches a bit, rests weight on a leg, hand on a hip, his uniform isn't even standard issue, though if you're playing him as a LCW the latter might not be as significant. He's not exactly closed off in posture, but you can tell he gets bored or is irritated, and then when of course Yata appears, he's completely on and radiating and active, so there's the juxtaposition you can play off of if something catches his attention like that. His expressions go through the same kind of cycle where you can tell he's bored or concentrating and then a switch is turned on and he's so full of energy (literally?). So more emphasis on body language might be a way to get across his disposition at a given time.

Anon will say it again that he's complicated and full of juxtapositions. He wants to be loved but he pushes people away. He destroys things first before other people can destroy them. He's insecure then plays up this tough bravado. He'll go off on his own to do something, but knows (even more so post-RoK) that people have his back despite him thinking they're a bunch of idiots. He works hard, ridiculously so (six people to do his job alone?!), but appears lazy or nonchalant and sometimes defiant of authority. Slightly veering off topic of how to handle him, but maybe knowing that he has so much going on inside might help when it comes to having him act/react in different situations?

If anon thinks of more, anon will pass along the info!

How they work can depend on the game itself since some just roll people for cases and some roll specifically for victim/culprit. So this can play a part since a game where they don't roll specifically would allow you to just say hey I'll have my character be the victim.

In either instance though, you work with the other player involved and the mods to shape a case that will work for your character. On your app you would have provided some potential motives and reasons for murder. One thing to also keep in mind is that by murdergame IC rules, an accidental death is still murder. Self-defense is still murder if the other person dies. So with characters like yours where they wouldn't commit murder themselves often the motive is tailored to the victim and the victim is the one who attacked and the culprit killed the victim by accident or in self-defense. There's plenty of examples of these, if you want some specific ones to go read over I can definitely name a couple from my past games and other players may know some more I don't.

So pretty much you don't need to twist their personality, you just need to be creative enough to get your character into a situation where they will cause the death of another character.

The above anons are correct, so I don't have anything but a +1 to add there, but there's also another subset of murdergames that don't work on a dice roll kind of system. Those games encourage people to come forward to the mod(s) with a "hey I want to murder someone" plan already in place even if it's a vague idea. So in those cases, characters that wouldn't really murder someone probably wouldn't, since it's up to you as the player to bring it forward.

Another gay anon here in a long term relationship and tbh there's nothing massive to spill, in my opinion. The other anon may have their own strong thoughts and feelings and they're entirely entitled to them, but for me I don't see the m/m stuff on dwrp as fetishizing any more than anything else around here.

There's a massive blind spot when it comes to things that are or have become really common parts of gay male sex, but then not everyone wants to think about the reality of poz status or incorporate poppers into their RP and I can't really blame anyone for that.

For me, when it comes to how m/m is written on DWRP I'm less bothered by the IC stuff than I am about some of the OOC opinions I see. The writing is fine and while it's sometimes funny to see the person I'm writing with just totally ignore the fact that balls exist or whatever, none of it is offensive or wildly factually inaccurate just because it's a woman/non-gay guy is writing the other half of the pairing with me. Being a gay guy doesn't immediately mean that we become gods of writing gay smut by default because bad writing is sometimes just bad writing. I've written with plenty of guys who are just awful writers, on DW and other sites, and there's honestly a reason that I stick around here for my m/m shit.

What bothers me is when I happen to catch OOC discussions where players act like they know all about gay male sex and sub-culture from playing a couple of pretty white LA men or anime boys online. The seme/uke shit has calmed down a lot over the years but it's still sort of there with people thinking that the exclusive top/bottom, dom/sub thing is like the word of gay god or whatever. While there are loads of guys who are rigidly in their box irl, when it comes to RP there is this weird superiority thing going on where non-gay guys seem to think they've reached some moral high ground of realism because they're not "actually" playing the seme/uke thing anymore, they're playing "a twink" or "a sub" or "a bottom" like that's more mature or respectful or something. But ultimately the way that dynamic plays out isn't wildly different there's just less crying and iyaaaaa~n-ing these days.

I personally don't care that people here mostly want to write dick A goes into ass-slot B, overwhelming want someone else to top, and like their mushy yaoi tropes (and that's not exclusive to anime players either fyi) because honestly people are mostly IC and you can find some good stuff over here.

It is a shame that if you wanted to play out some of the more realistic parts of gay male risky sex you're basically committing reputation suicide under a lot of non-gay guys getting angry and indignant on your behalf. There was some wank not too long ago about poz characters and bug-chasing/risk of infection being the worst and most disgusting thing in the whole wide world sweet baby jeeeeezuz and that bothered me because, again, it was a bunch of people being pissed and disgusted on my behalf as a gay dude. Or were just plain disgusted by the idea that real gay men sometimes get HIV/AIDS and there's a niche fetish around consensual risk of infection. I mean, I have poz friends and when I see m/m players and people in general fly off the handle about how disgusting or offensive it is to even reference HIV ICly or play a poz character, or even entertain even the fleeting idea of writing fictional bug-chasing, that bothers me a whole lot. But again I'm not mad at dw rp as a whole for not wanting to embrace these topics during their pretty boy pretendy fun times. They're contentious, heavy issues so I get it.

I guess what I'm saying overall, to me, there's nothing to really worry about. As far as areas in the world where I feel uncomfortable as a gay dude go, dw rp's handling of m/m shit really isn't one of them and most of the issues for me come from OOC attitudes more than IC writing.

m/m werewolf heat/mating/breeding. modern day AU where werewolves are scarce. two guys that are both wolves meet, start dating, and eventually it comes to mating season and they get super primal about their desires. sexual exhaustion, endurance, light cum inflation, marking, maybe they fall into the mindset of getting pregnant so they can have a family and pups and after get embarrassed about it because they're dudes and that's not a thing for them. idk.

slow-burn PSL would be nice. drawn canons, 17+ age pref. no children's canons please. i like to play as versatile so someone who is willing to swap between topping and bottoming for their dude would be fantastic.

Except I have yet to have a problem with that. I can more than make AC and can get a few tags done in a thread per day if the other person is in fact a boomerang tagger.
