What's frustrating is that so few people want to admit this is coming. It's not even just a matter of theoretical automation anymore. Shipping companies are testing out self-driving trucks for long haul drives right now. The very instant they're reliable and profitable enough to implement on a wide scale anywhere from 1 to 3 million trucking jobs are going to disappear.

Then there's the matter of the impact automation will have on small town economies. It'll be Route 66 all over again, except that towns along Route 66 have survived by carving out a niche as significant historical landmarks. No one gives a shit about I-94 in Montana or I-20 in Alabama and the towns along those routes will be decimated by the decline of money flowing into their diners, motels, and convenience stores.

There are measures we can take to prevent millions of people from being left completely destitute, but working out the kinks in the programs that could be implemented needs to start now instead of waiting ten to fifteen years like we did when manufacturing jobs started to disappear in 2000. The new Boeing and Ford jobs are good things but they're not enough. It's like we were told the ceiling is about to collapse and we put a bucket under the leak. But instead the people that have the capacity to make these changes for the next four years are going to crow about bringing manufacturing jobs back when they're just not capable of doing so on a scale significant enough to make a difference.

I really don't understand all these criticisms about how so and so sequence in Moana didn't advance the story or it never adequately explained x and y thing about the universe. It's a kid's movie.

Before anybody runs away with that, what I mean is not that kids don't deserve good movies or that effort shouldn't be put into making them. I'm saying that the standards for what makes a kid's movie good is different than those for adult movies. I really do think that as children's movies are concerned, theme is a lot more important than impeccable narrative structure or whatever.

The coconuts and crab were filler? Okay, sure but they didn't add nothing to the movie. They were fun. They were things that children find entertaining, and if children are entertained, they will be more invested in the movie and therefore be more invested in the movie's message.

This is a shallower example, but I saw Moana in a theater full of six year olds. Before the movie, there was a Sing trailer, that one awful one where they're all ice skating and that one pig wears a gold speedo. I shudder just remembering it, but all the kids in the theater thought it was the funniest thing ever. And that's what matters. If they go see Sing because of that and come away with the message that it's important to reach for your dreams despite adversity (or whatever, I know nothing about Sing) then it doesn't matter whether or not I, as an adult, think the speedo pig is horrifying.

With Moana specifically, what really stuck out to me was that absolutely nothing she did was forced on her. Whenever she lost confidence and wanted to back out, nobody stopped her. Her grandmother never told her not to give up her dreams and become chief, she just asked if that's what Moana really wanted, and Moana came to the decision on her own. When the ocean took back the heart because Moana asked it to, that really surprised me in a good way, because it made her decision to go forward with the quest anyway all the more meaningful because she decided for herself she could still do it and she was going to find a way on her own. Kids getting a message like that, that you always have a choice not to do something hard but you can still choose to do it and push forward and succeed anyway, is worth a few irrelevant (but still awesome, bite me) coconut scenes imo.

for me, the part of the problem that gets me frustrated is that there's also the population boom to take into consideration. baby boomers aren't retiring yet, and even when they do, if those jobs are even still available, the population across the world (and certainly in the united states) has increased significantly since then. it's jumped significantly in less than 20 years. 2000 had it at 291.42 million. 2008 saw it at roughly 304.1 million people. it's at about 321.53 right now. the population is growing and the workforce is shrinking. between full time positions being scaled down into part time ones and automation taking over, the idea of telling someone to just get a job is laughable. when you combing the two factors, it's a problem that people need to take seriously, since there just won't be enough positions open for people to fill when it's more 'cost effective' to replace them with machines.

Ladykiller in a Bind is coming to Steam. I've heard it's pretty explicit so I'm a bit surprised that it got in. But then again Steam's policy is pretty inconsistent.

They've reworked the stretch goals and gotten a bit of a boost in money after doing so. Whether or not they will even make their base goal remains to be seen. They only got eight days.

i mean probably not, but mitigating the damage means being aware of these issues coming down the pipeline and not just sitting around with our thumbs up our asses

The best people know how to adjust. If I'm in a time sensitive game group thread with you idgaf about quality (after a point of course, I'm not saying abandon all standards) I just want to move the thread forward.

If I'm doing a PSL with you then please, take your time, just let me know if it's going to be super long and that's less because I need your tags now and more just so I don't have to wonder if you're in the hospital or whatever. Same if it's a game thread but isn't time sensitive.
