what dubbed anime can you guys think of that would appeal to a comedy-loving non-weeb normie? i'm asking for my mom. and it has to be dubbed.

her favorite anime is shin-chan, and she likes american stuff like family guy/seth mcfarlane stuff, shows on comedy central, that sort of stuff. i was thinking about downloading her panty and stocking, studio ghibli movies, and the infamous ghost stories dub, maybe space dandy.

not sure about bobobo (canon-blind), cromartie (canon-familiar, but not sure if it's too "anime" for her. thoughts?), or the devil is a part-timer (dub-blind, canon-familiar). not comedies, but might download wolf children just to give her mom feels. maybe leafie too.

feel free to suggest other genres, but she's not really into drama or romance/romcoms. she might be into slice of life or mystery depending on the show. nothing "kiddy" or super ecchi, please. she's a cat lady btw, if you know any comedies featuring kitties.

would she object to watching a show about teenagers? because if so, school rumble is clever, funny, and at times absurd. it's pretty heartwarming, too, and features tons of pop culture references to everything from the matrix to power rangers to freaky friday to battle royale. the plot does center on a boy who's in love with a clueless girl, but i wouldnt call it a romance because you know from the very first episode that it's not gonna happen, and the show's more about the stupid things that happen as a result of the misunderstandings.

oh, and at one point one of the characters swaps bodies with a cat. so there's that.

any idea if Chi's Sweet Home got a dub? it's the first comedy featuring kitties that I thought of.

I'm seconding Panty & Stocking as well as the Ghost Stories dub because it's fucking hilarious. The Ghost Stories dub is also on crunchyroll. Excel Saga might work, it's an oldie but a goodie and from what I heard, the dub's pretty good despite it being an older dub.

I was thinking the same thing and via google, it seems it got licensed and has a dub, but finding the dub appears to be easier said than done. Only thing I could find was videos removed for copyright violations.

if there's a dub, it seems to be obscure like above anon said. :( maybe i'll ask her if she's willing to deal with subs for it, since the episodes are only 3 minutes each.

the cromartie high dub is fantastic, i don't even watch it in japanese anymore. the humor is weird and might not appeal to parents, but your mom might be awesome and get it. it's hilarious if it's your kind of thing. worth a try!

i only watch the dub because i think it's hilarious. tbh, i think the dub americanized the humor and jokes, so i think the humor should be fine for her. and freddie mercury is in there. on a horse. what more can a person ask for?

if she'll get a chuckle out of history/nationality jokes, hetalia, esp since the dub added more of that family guy-esque humor to it. though the format might be a little confusing for someone who isn't used to weeby stuff.

I actually quite enjoyed the dub of Ouran High School Host Club. I think the over the top goofiness more than balances out the occasional serious moment.

The dub of the Devil is a Part-Timer is pretty good, actually. If you’re watching it on Netflix though, there’s some issues with the subtitles. Subtitles only exist for the Japanese language track, so in the dub, when the characters are speaking the demon language there are no subtitles. You’d have to manually turn the subs on, or leave them on and try to deal with the fact that they won’t match the English audio word-for-word. Dunno if they’ve changed this since I last watched it.

was coming here to say the same thing about the part-timer dub! i watched it last a few months ago and no, they haven't changed that on netflix. at the same time, the demon language usage is so infrequent after the first episode or two (there's one somewhere in the middle that features it briefly, but it's honestly nothing too important even if you miss it) that it's not necessary to keep the subs on for the whole series anyway.

Gonna toss in the really old dubs of Sailor Moon up through Sailor Moon R. My mom liked those a lot. Seconding Excel Saga, but you might want to warn that it takes a while to get used to Excel's voice (I think after the third episode it becomes way less nails-on-chalkboard-grating). The Wallflower is also really good, and super cute. Fruits Basket might be her type too.

The Mushishi dub is really nice, and the show is very soft and serene and focuses on mystery. It's a rather sleepy show since it likes to take things in very calmly, though, so there's a chance she might lose the attention span for it.

Travis Willingham as Ginko is A+ though, would listen indefinitely

show her the first ep of cromartie and if she likes it she likes it. regardless of how "anime" she finds it she will probably enjoy the humor, based on what you've said of her.

anyway my recommendations would be sgt frog and nerima daikon brothers. sgt frog isn't what i would call a kid's show but it's appropriate for all ages, nerima daikon brothers is raunchy as shit, and hilarious as shit as well. the dub is excellent and i would highly recommend it, especially if she likes adult humor.
