older characters preferred but i don't really care, any medium is fine as long as it's not super-long (like 200+ episodes or eight novels with thousands of pages each)

She's the milder side of this description (30, less stoic and more low key), but try Balsa from Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. She like to be a mother, but has Important Past Things to take care of, first.

Cool big sister/brother types who have their own things going on beyond mentoring the protag, bonus point if they're slightly shady/manipulative or formerly on the villainous side. Gender no object, I'll taste any medium except vidya games because I suck at those.

...I know you said no vidya, but 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors has two of these, one of which fits the bonus points category.

It's a visual novel with puzzles for DS, so they're easy to look up answers to, and if you have iOS, there's a port with no puzzles, so straight up VN!

bishop from DOGS: bullets and carnage (manga). i don't want to spoil too much of it but there's more to him than meets the eye. forewarning though, the manga's been on hiatus for about a year.

I'm looking for a semi-redeemed villain. The kind that definitely was a villain or still is a villain (preferably not just manipulated or misled into being one) but isn't totally set in their ways and is questioning some things. Basically, kind of evil still but with the capacity to make positive CR and function in a cooperative game environment, and good in-game redemption arc material.

I have no real medium preference! Length doesn't really matter, either, as long as canon review isn't too complicated.

The villains of all 3 seasons of symphogear are somewhat sympathetic but unquestionably evil, and they're just 12 episodes of anime so it's easy to work through

Sly, playful characters with secrets to keep. Something in the vein of Xellos from Slayers or Waka from Okami, but ideally with a little more depth. Any medium.

Olivier Lenheim or Renne Hayworth from Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Renne is mostly playful because she's a kid, but Olivier is just in general weird. There's definitely lots of depth to both of them as well.

morally gray, antihero, or villainous women who aren't one-note evil antagonists, hypersexualized sadists, or willing to mend their ways at the first sign of heroic d or v. they don't have to be strictly antagonists; if they work with the heroes on occasion (or are part of the hero's team, to some conflict) that's fine too.

any medium is fine, though i'd prefer series that don't require a long-term commitment to a huge number of books/chapters/multiple seasons.

I don't mean "but deep down they really care about their friends/family/dog", someone who really isn't that attached. All of my current characters are tied up with enough honor and social obligations that I miss something else.
