Stuff I've seen has made me curious but I'm not sure if there's really a variety of characters or if it's all a bunch of bland soldier-types

Metal Gear has a reputation of being both incredibly serious and absolutely ridiculous at the same time. It's a character driven series, focusing a lot on topics like how war and the concept of war as a business affects people so it does put in the work to develop most of its cast. If it's character variety you're looking for, it certainly doesn't disappoint. From medics who are movie enthusiasts to actual vampires to robot dogs, it isn't lacking in the creativity department.

there really is a variety of characters, and all of the characters are (at least in my opinion) pretty compelling. it's nothing like the standard Call of Duty type war shit you'd think it is based on the fact that it's military-themed. mgs is a big mishmash of stuff--it leans heavily into the sci-fi and cyberpunk genre (though some of the games are less cyberpunk-y and more james bond-y). it's honestly more like an anime than a game in a lot of ways--philosophical, very heavily character-driven and story-focused.

there's absolutely a variety of characters & even the soldiers aren't bland

like, solid snake, the main character of most of the games, seems like a pretty normal gruff soldier dude... except he's kind of sweet and very philosophical and likes movies and has strong opinions on the ability of technology to preserve the human experience, and he loves dogs and he loves languages and values love itself deeply. he's great! And he's entirely unique in the series! his dad (the protag of most of the other games) is nothing at all like him, aside from being handsome and scruffy and good at fighting-- they have entirely different philosophies and feelings about love and war and dumb movies-- and they're nothing like anyone else.

There's great female characters, there's great bisexual and gay characters, there's tons of antagonists that are doing what they think is the best thing to do to improve the world, there's so many viewpoints and interests spread over the various characters and LOOK PLAY THESE GAMES OKAY. THEY'RE REALLY GOOD. or at least mgs 1-3 are really good, and funny and touching and serious as hell and truly ridiculous.

basically all i can ask is do you like really shitty main characters who are irredeemable garbage piles that fandom treats as gods and do you like women characters who get fridged worse than if they were a side character girlfriend in a 90s comic?
