No professor I've had ever let someone get away with shit like that. Hell, I had one that wouldn't let me retake a midterm I missed because I was sick and I even had a doctor's note saying I wasn't bullshitting them.

lmfao right, I had an instructor that wouldn't let one of my friends reschedule her final exam which was on her DUE DATE because it was "statistically unlikely" that she would actually give birth that day

that is recipe for disaster. great job giving terrible, horrible advice that would only screw them over and make things even worse for them.

it depends on the professor

it's unlikely that they'll actually be able to do anything about not turning in a major essay, and the student will very likely still fail the class

but a good professor will want to know what is going on and have suggestions about the overall situation

many schools also offer "incomplete" grades for courses that can be cleared by the next semester, with student and professor making a contract for what work will be made up and what the due dates will be
