Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

My younger brother is going to start a welding training program in the fall and will be renting a room out of a rental house. I want to get him something practical for living on your own for the first time for a high school graduation gift, so do any anons have an idea what would work? Preferably something that can be bought for under $50.

I'd advise something he can lock. Either a trunk that has a lock on it or one of those fireproof containers for important documents. That's a good thing that most people won't think of to get and will be useful for years to come.

Kitchen/cooking stuff! They can be kinda expensive, but a sharp knife + covered nonstick skillet + cutting board are the combo I can't really cook without, and I think you could do that under budget!

But +1 to above anon, if you can get him a trunk that locks for $50 you should go for it. If he will be living communally, that will be way more helpful than anything else.

first aid kit or home toolbox! You can get a basic bandages/painkillers/tweezers/rubbing alcohol or screwdriver/wrench/hammer/measuring tape kit pretty cheap, and they're so handy to have

OP said he's going to be renting a room, so chances are high they already have a microwave there. Honestly, kitchen stuff isn't a good idea in this situation since OP would have to check on what is already provided by the place and what isn't, though dishes and utensils usually are good to have his own set of.

depends on what kind of access he gets to the rental home kitchen. if he doesn't have much access or they discourage him puttering around in there, i'd get him a minifridge or one of those electric water boilers.

otherwise, i'd either get him some kind of do it yourself kit (tool kit or first aid kid like others suggested, or like a sewing kit) or a REALLY COMFY pillow
