Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

how do people who play party members, or otherwise not the inquisitor/warden/etc., deal with those characters? do you pick canon points from before meeting them? do you go along with whatever personality the person playing the MC gives them, do you have them say "oh weird you're not my inquisitor," or something?

i'm interested in playing from both sides of that but haven't tried yet, so just curious.

do you mean on memes or in games?

in memes, i usually just wing it. sometimes there's a little ooc discussion on what canon point we want to do, but not much else because by tagging together, my character is accepting the protag as the version they know.

in games, i app in with whatever world state/protag is the default from my playthrough. there's always the "not my inquisitor" conversation if an inquis apps in or is there already, but that usually provides interesting opportunities for cr development.

thank you! this makes sense and is sort of what i figured would be the norm, but i wanted to get other people's thoughts on it just in case.

this is the weirdest question. honestly, you can't even play the companions before meeting the protags because that just delves mostly into headcanon territory and no one wants to deal with that sort of thing.

typically, most people play with their own protag in mind. this is not law, but that tends to happen. if you're speaking in terms of memes, if a protag tags a companion, usually you go with that as the companion's protag. obviously things can change up a bit -- we already know alternate worlds are a thing that exist in the da world -- but people usually talk about it beforehand if you go the route of the companion not knowing that particular protag (personally, i've done it a few times and it can be fun).

in games, i always app in with my own world state. my companion knows his/her own protag(s) and won't deviate from that. there's always the conversation about companions not knowing the protag (which does get kind of old after a while, but part and par for the course playing from canons such as this), but can be handled well if the protag player isn't one of the special sect who get pissy and passive-aggressive if your character doesn't recognize theirs. aka if you're playing the protag side: don't do this.

this sort of thing is really a choose your own adventure. there's no "right" or "wrong" way to play it. just communicate your wants for the thread/cr.

sorry about the question! i haven't really thoroughly checked out any casts, so i wasn't sure, and i didn't want to be one lone jerk alienating people by doing things not how everyone else does. but this definitely makes sense, thank you!

that comment will only apply to a select few, and even fewer if you go by info provided in some of the supplemental books, comics, etc.

When playing a companion in game I try to match whatever the MC is for world state, choices, etc if I'm coming in after them or if they app soon after my app into the game (and try to be vague about Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor if I don't have one - which is pretty easy, it's rare to find someone who deviates from a standard for those three). I generally ask first if someone is okay with being "(My Character)'s (Protag)" and while I've never gotten a no I'd roll with it if I did.

If they app in significantly later after I do and there's things I established that can't be easily retconned after they join (Or the prevous one dropped and a new one apps) I just roll with 'Oh, different protag'. Alternately I do this if I want to play a character from a very specific set of player controlled circumstances that pretty much never show up. Isabela who was given back to the Qun, exiled!drunk!Alistair, Cole who ragequit the Inquisition.

I really want to do that last thing, except from the Inquisitor's point of view—like an asshole Trevelyan who forced Blackwall to keep pretending he was a warden, or got people to quit, or generally chose all the manipulative and politically expedient things. If you ever toss any unusual versions of characters on memes or whatever I hope I see you!
